Canon: Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Character: Kyoko Sakura
Timeline: Episode 8, directly after Sakaya becomes a witch.
Personality:

Bold, crass, cocky and generally a jerk to those around her, Kyoko is the epitome of the “rival” character in your typical Magical Girl anime. However, this being Puella Magi Madoka Magica, there’s more to her than your typical stereotype would imply.

Kyoko considers her magical girl status a business: you fight to get to the top, keep no friends, and most of all, you do it for yourself. She cares little for attachments, instead roaming as a free spirit out for completely selfish and prideful gain. Magical girls, in theory, destroy witches to prevent the spread of their depression and suicide causing powers to normal humans. Kyoko, in order to keep her own soul gem clean, allows witches to kill a few people so that they drop a grief seed. Her justification for this is that the world has a food chain: witches eat humans, magical girls eat the witches. It’s the natural order.

Aggressive and proud, Kyoko is made for the dog-eat-dog world of Madoka. She fights fiercely and harshly, never hesitating to kill a fellow magical girl or even a human to better her own gains. Having destroyed her family through a misplaced but well-meaning wish, Kyoko has lost faith in using magic for others, and therefore has vowed to use it but no one for her. Seeing other people make her same mistake of using magic for others bothers her greatly. Heroism is useless in a world of little reward for dedication and friendship.

Despite all of these negative qualities, Kyoko is not heartless. When you have her respect, she will be generally nice (for her, at least) to you and has in the past teamed up with those who she does not like in a familial way to defeat a common enemy. Despite always having a snack in her mouth, she’s quick to share with people she might come across if they’re interesting. If she does find a cause to fight for, her determination and stubbornness causes her to fight to the very end, no matter the odds or logic.

Though her past experiences have caused her to lose faith in humanity and god, somewhere deep down inside her she still prays to these things.

Background:
In the world of Madoka, the universe is in a state of entropy. The universe is losing energy and dying, and alien races are desperately trying to find ways to counter this decay. The incubators, a weasel like alien species, found a source: the emotions of the human species on planet earth. They found the existence of “Puella Magi”, magical girls whose powers and existence exceeded all logic. However, they also found that these girl’s emotions let off huge amounts of energy, enough perhaps to counter the dying universe. But eventually each puella magi turned into a witch, an Eldritch-style abomination that feeds off negative emotions, which releases a huge amount of energy as well. Seeing this system as a way to save the universe, the incubators came to Earth to create the puella magi, and by extension, the witches. The puella magi would fight the witches and kill them, which would release energy. They would obtain their grief seeds and restore their soul gems to purity with them, releasing more energy. And eventually, they would turn into witches themselves, releasing yet more energy by the release of negative emotions. It was a perfect system.

Kyoko was born in Japan to a family led by a priest father. They lived comfortably from income by her father’s church, but then her father decided to preach new things, things that weren’t accepted by his followers. Though he had the full support of his family, his congregation left him quickly and he was excommunicated from the church. The family fell into poverty, barely having enough to put a meal on the table each day. The situation was desperate, and Kyoko just wanted people to see that her father was right, to make everything better again. Then, she met Kyubey, an incubator.

Her wish was simple: “I want people to listen to my father”. And they did. The next day, hundreds of people came to listen to her father’s words. Food and seeming happiness returned to the Sakura household. In exchange, Kyoko fought the witches with pride, inspired by the fairy tales she so loved. She was making her father happy and her family safe and fed. That alone made her happy. But with every piece of happiness given with a wish, so is there equal misery.

Eventually, Kyoko’s father found out about her double life as a magical girl, and the terrible truth: that people weren’t listening to his words, they were just following the commands of magic. This maddened him, drove him to insanity so much that he snapped, and murdered his entire family. Kyoko was the only one left.
Kyoko was left on her own but not defenseless. She took to the streets, stealing to feed herself more than she would ever need and fighting the witches all the way. It was here that she adopted a new philosophy: to never use magic for anyone but herself.

Time passed, and new territory for witch hunting opened up by the death of another magical girl. Kyoko moved in, only to find that another puella magi had been created and had taken over the city, named Sakaya. Angered at this, she sought her out and attempted to kill her, annoyed at her for overtaking her territory and holding on to such silly ideals like puella magi should fight for justice and peace. She is stopped by her comrade in witch-fighting Homura, so she puts off the battle until later.

The next time they meet, Kyoko gets a surprise instead of a battle. She learns the true nature of the puella magi: That their soul gem is literally their soul ripped out of their body. The only way she can die is if it’s destroyed; the body being a mere puppet for the gem. In essence, she has become a Lich through the contract. This horrifies her to no end, and she begins to think of ways to rebel and save herself from this situation, no matter what terrible odds are stacked against her.

Eventually, Kyoko encounters Sayaka in a completely broken state, the grief of her wish completely crushing her. Her soul gem becomes completely corrupted, and because of this, Sakaya transforms into a witch. It is in this moment that Kyoko is pulled to Adstring.

Abilities/Additional Notes:
As a puella magi, Kyoko obviously has access to magic. Her main weapon is a lance much larger than herself which she can summon from hammer space. This lance can change into a whip or chains at will, which she uses for combat purposes. She is able to use her magic to create chain-like barriers as well. In addition, she is shown to use magic powered binoculars that can see for miles.

Since her soul is separated from her body, she will not die no matter how much damage her physical body will take. Killing her requires destroying her soul gem. Likewise, if she does not cleanse her soul gem by using grief seeds (she will be bringing two to Adstring), she will turn into a witch. Kyoko also has high above average speed, stamina and strength for a human. Puella Magi also have the ability to psychically communicate with each other and presumably other magical beings.

She is also gifted with a high metabolism.

Sample RP:
The girl was frustrated, it was obvious. Being stuck in a place with no witches meant that she was out of a job, and more importantly, out of the realm of possibility that she could stay human for longer than these grief seeds would last her. That bastard rat wasn’t anywhere near here as well, she could tell. For a fleeting moment, she was a bit worried about that, that concern quickly being replaced by frustration.

“Dammit.”

Sitting up from the half-ruined bench she was sitting on, the girl takes an apple out of her pocket, sinking her sharp teeth into the red flesh hungrily. Putting the other hand in a pocket, she begins walking pointedly.

“I’ll find a way to stop from becoming that. Screw the little rat bastard.”

It’s more said to an invisible audience than herself. Tossing just the bare core of the apple on the ground, she marches onward with a purpose.
