The Day of the Fall

In the early hours of the morning in New York, before most people had even risen from bed to prepare for work, the city began to die. The infestation traveled fast through the population, and the people that died suffered from what appeared to be seizures, internal bleeding and shortness of breath before collapsing. By the time most people were leaving their homes to catch taxis or hop on the subway, it was all over the news channels. People were advised to stay indoors, lock their windows and stay away from anyone that looked ill. By noon the city was gripped in panic. A full-scale evacuation had started without government orders. The rest of the country seemed to be dealing with the same problems, but no one had any answers.

Some made it out of the city, but most were trapped in the streets, in their cars. It didn't matter either way. Everyone suffered the same, and everyone died. Those that didn't perish began to mutate. Some effects were instantaneous, and some changes were made internally. Those that had slow deaths were torn to pieces by those that had outwardly mutated, the same monsters that roam the streets at night now.

The rest of us did what we had to in order to survive. Hiding, running, fighting to get out of our apartments and vehicles. We are the last of the human race. In every city and country in the world, the same thing has happened. Our kind balances on the edge of extinction, hunted by those that were once our mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, friends, lovers. If you see a face you recognize in the street, run. Chances are they'll be following anyway.

How long has it been since The Fall happened?
This game takes place in real time! The Fall happened in January of 2008.

So my character has a power in this game?
Yes, all characters have powers. The power you choose is completely up to you. It can be something mundane or magnificent; it doesn't really matter either way. The game is really about plot anyway in the long run.

What sort of role play is this?
The focus of this game is mainly on the family group the characters have created and the circumstances in which they've survived together. Bonds are built, families are brought together, lovers are found, children are born. There are hardships, food is scarce, danger is around every corner... but together we find solace. As a portion of the last of the human race, we are trying to start over, hoping in the meantime to build a better future for ourselves. The game primarily takes place inside and around the hotel, in nearby buildings, in Central Park, at the O'Brinn camp. Make friends, find love. Through steady story lines that rise and fall in the game, our characters have grown. Many of them have overcome fears, pushed through boundaries, evolved. They aren't who they were over a year ago.

What content is allowed in this game?
Pretty much anything goes, so long as it's consensual between the two muns. Sex, violence, death, pregnancies, incest, injuries, strife. We welcome both gay and straight relationships.

Anything not allowed in this game?
Absolutely no underage sexual relationships. Sorry, but this is pretty much standard.

Did animals survive the Fall?
Yes, there are animals. They were not directly affected by the changes made to the human race, as their genetic structure is different. They've started to move into the cities, taking over where they can. Be wary of zoo animals as well that have survived and escaped!

How do we have food?
Scavenging for canned foods. Group hunting sessions. Trade with the OBO. Fresh fruits and vegetables are created daily by Ana, one of the PCs.

What's up with the monsters? Are they zombies?
No, they are not your classic zombies. They are another fraction of surviving humanoids that did not adjust to the change correctly, mutated and became feral. They roam the streets (mainly) after sunset, screaming and howling, tearing apart any living thing (including animals) they can find. They are horribly disfigured, animalistic and dangerous. They do not tend to hunt during the day, although exceptions have been witnessed. Lately it is rumored that they are reproducing and establishing a primitive sort of tribal system. If you run into them, they are likely to be in packs, and they WILL come for you. At sundown, the city is teeming with them.

What's up with the bad guys?
Every good game needs a great antagonist. There is a group of NPCs led by a bi-gender woman named Alexis. She and her people have sought our group out several times, tortured us, kidnapped us. She seems bent on total domination, though after our last encounter with her she and her group have not been seen since. It is hoped that she has finally given up. Only time will tell for sure...

There's a power I want being used by an NPC. Can I have it?
Likely yes. Just talk to the moderator about it. Mention it in your application, and we'll go from there!

The power I want is already taken by a PC. Can I have it?
This answer is case by case. Ideally we'd love to see original or unused powers, but if there's something you really wanted, just talk to the head moderator. There's a good chance a repeat power will be allowed.

What's up with this bi-gender thing?
As you may have noticed, some of the characters in this game seem to defy the laws of reproduction. We like to call these characters "bi-gender". The bi-gender characters in this game (Loren, Jamie, Tara & Alexis) began life as one specific sex. They were genetically predisposed for the change from birth, bearing either an extra X or Y chromosome. At the time of the Fall those chromosomes were triggered...

The men began their transformation experiencing heavy cramping, discomfort, nausea. Most of the pain that arose centered in their lower abdomen. After about a month had passed since the Fall, blood began to appear in their urine. Their hips began to shift, a searing pain that left them crippled at times. After approximately two months a small slit appeared between their legs behind their testicles, eventually becoming a vaginal opening over time. By three months in small breasts had also formed, and the change was completed. Male to female bi-genders cannot grow facial hair, have fine and woman-like body hair, and are prone to mood swings.

The women who underwent the bi-gender transformation had it significantly easier. Their bodies began to shift nearly a month after the Fall as well, a pressure becoming more and more noticeable just above the vagina. Roughly two months in -- where there had previously been an uncomfortable sensation -- a bump started to form, solid and almost tumor-like in appearance. Nearly a month later a fully formed and functional penis would had developed. Along with the addition of the penis, women bi-genders underwent a decrease in the size of their breasts as testosterone changed their body. Slight pain accompanied these bi-genders on and off, and a while after the formation of the penis, testicles formed and dropped, completing the shift. Female to male bi-genders cannot grow masculine facial or body hair but are prone to mood swings and bouts of aggressive tendencies.

Those who survived long enough for the shift to become complete are incredibly fertile. They are able to both impregnate and be impregnated. All urinate from their vaginal opening, the penis rendered useless in this area. Bi-genders all have a uterus and fallopian tubes, eggs and sperm. All have a closer ovulation cycles, able to be impregnated nearly a week after giving birth. Menstrual cycles come every 24 days on average, and last roughly two to three days. All bi-genders experience a higher desire for sex -- nature's way of telling them to make use of their reproductive organs, insurance for the survival of the human race.

If you want to bring in a bi-gender character, you must make mention of it in your application so that it can be discussed with the mod team. As long as we aren't super over-run with them, we're likely to be totally cool with it. Any bi-gender characters entering the game at this point will have completely gone through their change by now (well over a year since the change would've happened) and be adjusted accordingly. He or she may keep their changes private if they're uncomfortable, so long as we know what's going on out of character!

Do bi-gender characters also have a power?
Yes, they do! Being able to give birth or impregnate somebody isn't a power, so you may still pick a power for your character!

Are powers genetic?
Yes, they are! The characters in this game are basically first-generation in the newly changed world. Siblings are likely to have the same or similar powers, and children of our characters will have an advanced or combined reflection of the genetics of their parents.

What's up with the character journals?
The character journals can be used in a few ways. You may post private thoughts (labeled as such) and public journalings (which for the sake of activity is a slight bending of reality).

Where do the characters live?
We have moved three times now, and for the moment we call the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in New York, NY our home. It is right across the street from Central Park, where we have started fencing in the area for livestock and gardening.

How will my character be brought in?
That's totally up to you! He/she may be found in the streets starving, fighting monsters, wandering, stationed somewhere... The possibilities are only as limited as you want them to be, really. Once found, your character will be adopted into the fold, and will be living at the hotel with the group.

I have an idea for a story line! Who do I talk to?
Talk to the moderators! We love hearing from our players! This game has gone through a lot of changes and plot lines since it's start back in Jan of 2008, and we're always looking for fresh ideas.

What's with the O'Brinn Organization?
The OBO is another group of people who have only recently contacted us. They are NPC run, and have so far been immensely helpful. Not much is known about them aside from that they have lots of food storage, they live just outside the city and have more in numbers than we do. We struck up a trade for food this winter and are hoping for further positive contact.

If a year has already passed in the game, how would my character have survived?
He/she may have holed up in a building with rations, been traveling with others and have been the only one to survive, may have lived with the OBO until now, etc... You can be as creative and detailed with this as you like.

Can my character have a pet?
So long as it's believable. It's unlikely that taking care of an animal would be easy in this setting, but dogs and horses would be the most believable. There is a dog living at the hotel, a cat and three wolves. The wolves have formed a small pack with a character who can speak to animals.

Do we have electricity?
Actually, yes. One of the NPCs has electrical abilities and helps to keep the building powered as best he can. He doesn't do much else aside from allowing us enough energy to last every day, his own body drained to the point of near exhaustion. It is the only reason we've survived the winter. However, the power is limited. Lights flicker and dim as the day goes by, hot water turns cold, heat stops coming from the vents... all until the next morning when it is again replenished.

Do we have cars?
The streets are filled with parked and crashed cars from the day of the Fall, which makes it difficult to use vehicles. Around the hotel the streets have been somewhat cleared, thanks to the work of a few individuals. We have used vehicles in the past, in moderation or for plot purposes.

Please let me know if there are more questions or things that need to be addressed...
