Having run a huge art APA/'zine (Where I deviated from the traditional APA format by making additional copies for sale to offset the costs and then some, making it also a 'zine which paid royalties to the artists) for 14 years, I have to say, Print is pretty much dead.
On the plus side, what killed it, the Internet, would make the whole process a LOT cheaper. You can compile the contributions, and produce a PDF that you can email back to the contributors. You could scan for those without scanners.
It's an interesting format, different from say, a Web forum. And I wish you luck with it.
