You are a very clever girl and I am sure ,if nothing, else, you can get some options and alternatives from that knowledge.
From what I can tell though, my perspective which may be wrong, your mom does not like to feel weak and you going to a high-class college would, intentional or not, demean her as she would see it.
I don't know the full deal so I will leave it at that.
But find out, don't give up. Keep your wits about you.
