Application for gargleblasted

IC:

Character name: Vergil
Fandom: Devil May Cry 3

Timeline: Post game, after reaching the Room of the Forbidden Ones in the Demon World where Mundus is. He also spent two years time in the game amatomnes and eventually got sent home, but I'd like him to retain his experiences from that time. I would also like him to retain his experience of chatting with Dante during the Fourth Wall event in gargleblasted, if that is possible.

Age: unknown, but based on his appearance and attitude, and the previous game that occurs after Devil May Cry 3, probably around 18 or his early 20's.

~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:
Like Dante, Vergil has inherited abilities that come from the demon half of his heritage. He has enhanced speed and strength, to the point that he can catch bullets with his sword and knock them back at opponents with the force of a gunshot. He can also move with superhuman agility, teleporting or dashing at short distances fast enough to resemble teleporting. He has the ability to use devil arms-such as his blade, Yamato-which are demonic weapons that help boost his natural abilities. Additionally, his demon constitution gives him the ability to heal from minor wounds in a matter of moments and survive a lot of more severe wounds that would normally be fatal to people. One example would be when Dante slashes him across the abdomen, and Vergil is able to walk away, fall off of a stories-high ledge, and still recover after a little rest. This ability can be worn down, and the longer he exerts himself. The harder it is for him to heal or fight.

Vergil relies heavily on his swordsmanship, and his technique is highly skilled. Unlike Dante, he disapproves of firearms and for long-range attacks prefers to summon demonic swords generated by magic. He can either cast these as projectiles or use them as a barrier to shield himself from attacks. If all else fails, he can also “Devil Trigger”, or transform to a demonic-looking form that temporarily gives his inherent abilities more power.

How would they use their abilities?:
In general, Vergil likes to test his strength against people he views as powerful. For the most part that is a limited list, and he prefers sparring against people he knows that are strong, like Dante. He is also willing to use his power in order to gain more of it, but that is mostly tied to his family line and specifically his father, Sparda's, power. He's a snob when it comes to his heritage, and isn't inclined to be greedy, or even that petty. His motivation for actually using his power is just to see how strong he is, being young and impetuous. Otherwise, he doesn't use a lot of his demon abilities unless forced to for defense.

Appearance:
In his normal form, Vergil has the same pale blue eyes and overgrown, silver hair as Dante. He usually wears it brushed back, perhaps for a more professional appearance. Vergil wears a deep blue leather vest-like top, black pants, and knee high brown leather boots. He has tan fingerless gloves and a long blue coat with a high collar as well.

Background/Personality:
Background
Two thousand years ago, a war broke out between the Human World, the world we live in, and another realm known as the Demon World. The demons were creatures of great power, and their lord, Mundus, ruled with tyranny and brute force. One of the demon lord's generals was a demon named Sparda, and he eventually saw the cruelty and injustice of his leader, turning on him to protect humanity. The great demon knight Sparda defeated Mundus and sealed him away, using his power to lock the gates between the Human World and the Demon World. In order to close the second gate, Sparda locked away his own power using his sword, the Force Edge, and an amulet. Then he ruled over humanity in peace and gradually his deeds faded into legend.

In modern times, Sparda fell in love with a human woman named Eva. The couple had twin sons, Dante and Vergil, and soon after Sparda either vanished or died. The boys grew up in Eva's care, each receiving one of Sparda's swords as heirlooms and half of the very amulet he used as part of the key to seal the Demon World and his power. But when they turned 8, vengeful demons attacked the family and Eva was killed. The twins survive and grow up apart, each taking a very different course in response to the tragedy. Vergil turns obsessively toward becoming stronger, over time researching the legend of Sparda and seeking away to unlock his sealed power. During his search, he was approached by a man named Arkham, who told him that he knew how to undo Sparda's seal on one of the gates to the Demon World. Vergil agreed to cooperate with him, and the two sought out Dante for his half of the Perfect Amulet that Sparda used to seal away his power and the Demon World.

After finding that Dante did indeed still have his half of the amulet, Vergil helped Arkham unseal the Temen-ni-gru, the tower and portal to the Demon World that Sparda locked. They began to undo the various seals of the tower, and Dante, “invited” by Vergil via a challenge, unwittingly helped by defeating the guardians locked in the tower to prevent its release. During this, a female demon hunter appeared, seeking revenge for her own mother's death. At the final seal, Vergil was thwarted when he was unable to reverse the spell, and both Dante and the demon hunter (called “Lady” by Dante) arrived to stop him. The three battled, and after they were worn down, Arkham reappeared, revealing that he had been using all of them to undo the seal and gain power for himself. It turned out that he was Lady's father and the cause of her mother's death. He sacrificed his wife in order to become a demon, and planned to use their daughter to become even more powerful. He defeated the weakened trio and used Lady's blood-the last key to the tower-to unlock the gate and ascend to the Demon World. Dante gave chase, and some time later Vergil followed. Arkham was able to find Sparda's Force Edge, still imbued with his demonic powers, but was unable to resonate with it, transforming into a formless mass. The twins set aside their rivalry long enough to defeat him, and then resumed fighting over the Force Edge themselves.

Ultimately, Dante defeated Vergil and claimed the Force Edge. However, Vergil told his brother to leave, choosing to stay in the Demon World, even though he wasn't able to obtain Sparda's power. He dropped off of a ledge deeper in the realm and encounters Mundus, charging in to face him without hesitation.

Personality
Serious to a fault and cool to the point of ruthlessness, Vergil is the foil for Dante. Where Dante is loud, brash, and protective of those he meets (even strangers), Vergil is quiet, studious, and rational with the willingness to sacrifice others in order to achieve his goal. He fixates on gaining strength and connecting to their demon father Sparda with single-minded determination. He's dedicated and honorable, but so consumed by perfectionism that it makes him distant and hard to approach. After the loss of his mother, Vergil became critical of human weakness and tends to take a negative view toward humans and those who are weak. In turn, he now constantly strives to overcome his own weaknesses so that he cannot be taken advantage of of defeated. He chases after the idea that more power will help him overcome the tragedies that he had failed to prevent in the past. With that goal always ahead of him, he is willing to risk practically everything around him to achieve potential victory.

On the other hand, Vergil does carry strong feelings for his family. He is ardently protective of the sword, Yamato, a keepsake from his father, and his half of the Perfect Amulet that he received from his mother. In fact, these two items are the only things in the game that he refuses to give up. He obtains the soul of the demon Beowulf as a devil arm and fights Dante for the sword known as the Force Edge, which is the key to Sparda's power. However, at the end he ultimately accepts defeat and relinquishes both of these weapons to his brother. He instead retrieves his half of the amulet and tells Dante that no one else can have it, even though alone it offers him no power. He also shows some affection toward Dante despite their repeated battles. He advises his twin when they fight--and perhaps tries to explain himself--by telling him that power is everything, and that gaining power is the only way for either of them to protect themselves. He repeats that later when he questions why Dante won't accept his demonic power as well. In the battle with Arkham, Dante and Vergil work together and Dante asks Vergil if he remembers what they used to say. Vergil acknowledges the bond they had as children by responding with the phrase they used to share. This shows that while Vergil is stubborn, sardonic, and ruthless in battle, he is not completely uncaring. At the end of the game, he warns Dante to leave the Demon World and intentionally falls deeper into it, leaving Dante with no opponent and therefore nothing to keep him there.

Vergil is a severe and harsh older twin, but he still gives Dante preference and seems to have a strong respect for family bonds. He persistently references their father and also seems to try to appeal to that connection to make Dante understand his motives. They don't think alike and it doesn't work, but he still makes that effort. His cold practicality is tempered with purpose, which makes him more aloof than a heartless monster. Unseen in the third game, Vergil also makes an appearance in the first Devil May Cry game, which follows the events in Devil May Cry 3. During this game, Vergil is corrupted and used by the demon lord Mundus to attack Dante. However, upon seeing Dante's amulet, he seems to recall something of his past and retreats several times when he has an advantage. This shows that even under brainwashing, he instinctively has strong positive feelings toward his family and doesn't really want to see them come to harm.

Why should that character be in this game: N/A

Why do you want to continue their history here: Vergil spent nearly two years on the island in amatomnes, building some small relationships, a couple of them actually becoming close, and gained a better experience with people as a whole. While he hasn't changed drastically in appearance or personality, I feel like he's developed more along the path of gaining perspective on others and that it would be a shame to lose the character growth. It doesn't really inhibit his canon inclinations, but gives them more definition and meaning. He would probably recognize a couple faces, but he's very familiar with different versions of people and different world.

I'd also like him to retain his experience from the Fourth Wall event in gargleblasted. He really just chatted with Dante, but it would help him transition more easily, as he's stubborn and standoffish by nature. It would just give him a little kick-start into talking.

Have you read up on how the game works?:
The plug-in is called the FlamingFerret. Characters can get money through missions or permanent jobs, gambling, or being a shameless loaf and bumming off of other characters.

1st person sample:
Move.

[Vergil's voice can be heard somewhere in the distance. However, the only thing visible at the moment is a mass of short hair, colored in various patches of browns and tans. The fur also seems to be making a symphony of purring noises, but Vergil is far from impressed. Finally, he manages to rescue his Guide from under the mass. When he looks at it, he appears to have gained a companion-one of the balls of fur is perched on top of his head. And, yes, it's purring just like the others.]

If this is supposed to be a joke, it's not funny.

[His voice is deliberately even and clear, just so everyone gets the message.]

I don't know what you intend to do with this useless thing, but if you don't want it destroyed, you'd better come collect it.

[He knocks the Tribble off of his head, and it makes a short squeak as it hits the ground.]

I'm sure there will be some left if you hurry.

3rd person sample:
People believe that the end of the world is one great event, a conclusive act of god that destroys everything that came before it. For Vergil, raising the tower to the Demon World was supposed to be that kind of end. Maybe not for the world-although the potential collateral certainly didn't put it out of the question-but at least the end of the world he knew. The world that had been too poorly weighted, with strength so heavily to one side, that it couldn't save one single woman. He'd had enough of that world, and no matter what demons or gods he might find in that other world, Vergil had decided he was already through with this one. Oh, it was going to be the end of humanity, all right. The end of his, anyway. As insufferable and ultimately annoying as Arkham had turned out to be (but not threatening, never that), he had been right about one thing. Vergil wasn't complete. Half-demon, half-human, and all lacking where it really counted. As much as he sacrificed, there were still places he couldn't bring himself to go to; things he couldn't bring himself to do. It took a demon to wield true demonic power, and Vergil had felt that deficiency in himself. Even Dante had seen it, though Vergil doubted his brother really understood what that meant.

It should have been flawless.

But what Vergil hadn't counted on was this. Something that could only be called divine intervention. If true demon power lay buried in the depths of the Demon World, Vergil never got the chance to find it. Instead, he was stranded in, impossible as it was, a spaceship. And staring at the third form in a seemingly endless supply of papers supplied by creatures he'd never seen before, Vergil couldn't help notice the irony that all the demonic power he might have gained would do nothing for him now.

Even if I killed them, there would be nothing to gain.

And he didn't mind tearing through ten or twenty if it meant building his own power, but these things, as strange as they appeared with their large eyes and inhumanly colored skins, were not demons. Killing them would be the same as killing humans. He cursed as that side of him that he had meant to leave behind on the precipice, along with the Force Edge and his only remaining family, tugged at his mind. Despite his intentions, entering the Demon World had not extinguished that part of him, and the thought of cutting down these generally peaceful beings was simply... not an option.

Besides, one of them-a thin, blue creature with reptilian features-had actually apologized when it handed him its set of forms. The familiar gesture reminded him of humans that had acted similarly in the past. They'd treated him as an ally, despite everything he had done to discourage them. They hadn't shied away from what he was, and had insisted that it didn't matter...that blood wasn't the same as strength. And, in the end, there was something in them that seemed somehow stronger than even a demon's power. Maybe, just maybe, there was something in that side of him that deserved another chance.

“Ohh, no blanks on this one! Looks like the fifth time's the charm!”

The green-headed thing looking over his completed paperwork opened its large, amphibious mouth and laughed. Vergil's fist clenched at his side. He wanted to shove the thing's head right into the wall behind it. But that was sure to earn him another round of this foolishness. After all, he had nowhere else to go. And by that time, Vergil was just glad to get away. So he took the offered “gifts” and let the creature wave him on.

Fools! They should have taken it the first time if they didn't care what was on it.

Questions?: None right now.
