It is not until Maureen that Roger gets proprietary of Mark. But as soon as she walks in the door, he recognizes a sway in her hips that spells trouble. And Roger watches, scowl on his lips, as his friend falls for every trap she sets, watches as he is devoured whole, watches as Mark takes all that she gives with a smile on his face, and still begs for more.

“You’re an idiot,” Roger tells him, somehow managing to keep the malice out of his voice.

“Why is that?” Mark is distracted, double-checking each cable as he places it in the box of equipment Maureen requires for her protest.

“Because she’s so clearly using you.”

Mark squints at him, and it’s worse than Roger thought. “For what?”

Roger waves a hand at the box at Mark’s feet.

“She didn’t ask me to do this. I offered.”

“Because you’re a nice guy, and she knows that. She knows you’re going to run around and bend to her every wish even before she voices them. It’s what you do.”

Mark shakes his head and picks up the box. As he makes his way to the door, muttering, Roger catches the word “jealous” and doesn’t bother to deny it.

He shows up early to the show; he can’t say no when Mark asks him to come. And as Mark fiddles with the mixer, Roger pulls Maureen aside, and she doesn’t even lose her grin because she can be a damn good actress when she wants to be.

“Listen,” he says, “I don’t think you’re a bad person or anything. It’s just that Mark’s a good guy. And he doesn’t deserve to get the runaround.”

She opens her mouth, but Roger cuts her off.

“All I’m saying is be careful. Because if you hurt him…”

And as the threat dangles unsaid in the air, Roger realizes that there really isn’t anything he can do to her except hate her, and even that she probably wouldn’t notice.

Her smile fades, and Roger doesn’t let himself look away even though he feels like the world’s biggest asshole.

“Roger,” she says. “That is so cute.”

It’s not what he expected. She’s not what he expected.

“Just so long as we have an understanding,” he says, watching his feet.

And then Maureen’s arms are around her neck, and she’s laughing in his ear, and he kind of gets it now because a man could get high off of this.

“Don’t worry, Roger,” she says. “I’ll treat him right.”

“Treat him more than right,” he tells her.

She grins and winks and says, “Oh, I do that, too.”
