Holy shit it has been ages since this journal has seen an update, hasn't it; a proper update, not a quick celebration of Christmas or the New Year. I blame London, wholeheartedly, and quite a lot of Shakespeare, and - just lately, anyway - Les Misérables, as seeing the movie (good acting, mediocre direction, singing ... more or less inconsistent) ( Read more... )

les misérables, fandom is a safe corner of my brain, shakespeare, the university chronicles, this fucking city, writing, sherlock, this city you guys

I'm actually going to be in London around 21-22 June for a Sherlock Holmes conference. Let me know if you'll be around then or have any interest in meeting up!

I actually have a classmate who's presenting a paper at that same conference, so if all goes well I should be around! :D I look forward to it.

Glad to hear you're enjoying London! For all that I (and everyone outside the M25) crack jokes about it, it's an incredible city, and your programme sounds like it's going great. I had to quit English Literature earlier this year, sadly, and we were studying Hamlet and I am unbelievably gutted that I miss out.

I completely missed going to see Les Mis due to a mountain of work falling on me the same time it came out, but I may get round to it sometime. Also, I should probably read the book; I'm a big fan of doorstopper French novels. Sadly, most of my reading these days are books for my classes, but I've been enjoying the Matthew Shardlake novels by C. J. Sansom, which are detective stories (long detective stories) set in 16th-century England. The main character is a lawyer who gets involved in all sorts of political and social intrigue, generally involving the bigshots of the Tudor era in one way or another. No idea if you'd be interested in that sort of thing, but they are very good :)

this is so odd to read considering I almost applied to King's to study English Lit but decided to go for Warwick uni instead. I love it here, but 6 hours of Shakespeare a week sounds like heaven to me. We're not allowed to study Shakespeare extensively until our third year... :( Then again since you're on an exchange programme maybe we wouldn't have been studying the same things.

Aw, that sucks. I'm in my Master year, though, so we probably wouldn't have been in the same seminars - as we would have been if we'd been at the same level, exchange programme or not. I hope Warwick uni is enjoyable for you anyway? It does make sense that they don't allow you to specialize yourselves in Shakespeare just yet, since they probably want you to build up an extensive cultural knowledge during your first two years. You'll get to it eventually! :D

Hello, nonnie — don't be shy! I would hate to think that I'm making anyone uncomfortable or unwilling to talk to me.

I'm ... not, really. Not in the sense of writing for it, anyhow. The general fandom (not the FrUK comm, which was lovely, but the widespread fandom) was becoming increasingly too batshit for me to be able to handle, and one specific incident just tipped it over the edge. I enjoyed writing silly human AUs a tremendous amount, and I loved, and love still, the friends and people I met there, and I still get rushes of affection for Francis and Arthur, the two perfect idiots, but a number of other fandoms occupy my interest and writing time, and I've no intention to return to it in the near future. Sorry! That probably isn't a very satisfactory answer.

(But London is fantastic. If you ever get the opportunity to go, you should absolutely take it — just being here is a wonderful experience.)
