Canon Character and Series: Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryu, The World Ends With You
In-Game Name: Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryu
Age: 21 (19 at game start)
Gender: Male
Position & Ship: The Convoy, Passenger.
Appearance: Joshua is fairly short and skinny, and despite his actual age, appears to be in his mid-teens. But it's not something that particularly bothers him, and he can often be spotted wearing a grin while he chats with strangers and acquaintances alike. He has a pale complexion, purple eyes and styled, ambiguously coloured hair that's a little messier than one would expect, given how neat he keeps his clothing -- a light dress shirt and semi-casual dress pants. Occasionally his looks earn him disparaging nicknames such as 'mop-head' or 'dustbunny' but Joshua simply shrugs them off and keeps smiling like he knows something everyone else doesn't.
He also tends to carry very little with him when he goes out, maybe his journal, a little money, and perhaps the occasional revolver for when he's hanging about parts of Vohemar and the Badlands. After all, why would he need anything more than his charming and intelligent self?
Personality: Joshua's quite sociable, able to carry a conversation with almost anyone he meets, but even though he's usually seen with a friendly smile on his face, Joshua is more often than not -- to be blunt -- a dick. He often gives the impression of being a slave to his whims, doing what he wants, when he wants, and social (and moral) norms don't appear to apply to him; he's the kind of person who won't think twice about the invading the privacy of others or sabotaging someone's chances in what is supposed to be a competition.
But despite his sociable nature, Joshua has difficulties getting close to other people. When he was young, he was ostracised by other children as they couldn't see the ghosts and spirits he could. He tried to reach out to the other children, to no avail. And from then on, Joshua unconsciously decided to push people away so that his ostracisation was on his terms, not theirs. Because of this, he picked up habits that make it difficult to get close to him -- an evasiveness that makes it difficult to know what he's thinking, an unsympathetic ear to others' troubles and a tendency to be a complete nuiscance three quarters of the time. Joshua himself is incredibly resistant to change; he doesn't like the idea of other people being able to influence him, and will laugh off, wave away or just plain ignore suggestions that he shouldn't be such a jerk. Joshua tends to view himself as being surrounded by people, but not being a part of humanity. This has slowly changed over time, but Joshua's default mode is to try and detach himself from both people and their influence.
Joshua's most defining characteristic, however, is his love for playing games with people. Some of the games are childish and harmless, but the vast majority of his games are mind games so he can pick apart the other players' brains and figure out how they think. Said mind games are often Joshua's way of passing the time, but ocassionally he will use them to help bring people to an important, life changing realisation, albeit in a rather convoluted manner. And that's how Joshua helps people in his backwards way; a little trauma never hurt anyone, and he believes sometimes you just have to be cruel to be kind.
Abilities/Weapons: Joshua has a great amount of magical potential, which was mostly unrealised in the past. Thanks to practice and lessons from an expert in not-quite-magic-but-close-enough over a few months, Joshua has more control over his powers. His magic is primarily telekinetic, and currently he can lift objects as large as an amoire and give inanimate objects telekinetic 'shoves'. He's experimented with levitation and using telekinesis to move other living things, but he's had such limited success that he can't put either to practical use. Moving small things takes little effort, but moving large objects with his mind in quick succession makes him feel sick from overexertion.
In addition to his telekinetic magic, Joshua can see and communicate with ghosts, and has some ability to exorcise them. He can summon beams of light onto the ghosts, and those with the ability to see spirits would be able to see afterimages of... cherubs... coming from the more powerful beams. During the Long Night, the cherubs are instead angels, carrying what appears to be a holy spear to strike the ghosts. Sure, the beams of light might be unhealthyfor ghosts and spirits, but they do absolutely nothing to non-ghosts. Additionally, there is a fairly lengthy start-up time for the more powerful beams (about 5-10 seconds) and frankly, the jesus beams are far too tiring for him to repeatedly use them. At the current point in time, he only has the energy for two powerful beams.
Sometimes Joshua carries a revolver with him and is a actually decent shot with it. However, it's not something he uses often, preferring to use his poker skills to win the monies from people.
How well can your character hack?: Medium. Joshua has used journals for a lengthy period of time, and has been learning to hack via an excellent teacher over the Network for a good many months now. He keeps his skills sharp by attempting to hack often.
Weaknesses: Past the age of six, Joshua grew up with the mindset that the only one he could trust is himself. This lead to a whole slew of issues down the track, ranging from being extremely attachment adverse to finding it difficult to talk about how he feels. Ultimately these culminate into an evasiveness when talk turns to anything personal, a tendency to run from his problems, a jerkass attitude to keep people from prying any further, and very, very few friends.
For the most part, Joshua has very little ability to defend himself from attack, especially if he happens to not be carrying his gun with him at the time. Usually he will opt for extracting himself from a sticky situation rather than standing and fighting.
History: Born in Melior, Joshua is the only child of his parents, and while they raised him and brought him travelling all over Reial as a child, Joshua was mostly left to his own devices. He was a quiet but curious child, friendly in that naive, child-like way. When he was about six years old, he made friends with another child similar in age. He enjoyed playing with his new found friend, but it was only when his parents didn't seem to see her that Joshua realised something was very, very wrong.
That child was actually a ghost.
Joshua's ability to see ghosts first manifested then, and it scared and confused him. But luckily, he'd caught the attention of a ghost-seeing older man, who helped Joshua come to terms with his 'gift'. But although the man seemed alright with Joshua's ability to see ghosts, that wasn't the case with other strangers... and his parents. Joshua quickly learned not to speak of his gift to other people, having become isolated from disbelieving children his age when he had. As he outgrew those children and moved onto higher levels of schooling, he didn't have as much difficulty socialising. But Joshua continued to see ghosts during his lifetime, and could never really bridge the gap between those without his gift and himself to become friends with anyone except the doctor he visited whenever he faked illness to get out of school, Isshin Kurosaki.
Life went on, and Joshua went on to study in a university specialising in the Fine Arts, graduating early at the age of 17. But after seeing the way adults live, Joshua wasn't willing to settle down and get a job in the cutthroat Arts industries in Melior. While Joshua loved his home city, he tired of the drudgery of everyday life and human vapidity. People didn't seem to be living, people didn't seem to be happy, and he couldn't do a thing to change it. It frustrated him.
Wanting to see more of the world to see if things were the same everywhere, Joshua began to travel over Reial via airships. But little made an impact on him, people were still selfish, people were still not living to their full potential, until he bought passage on board the Winding Way, a theatre ship.
And Joshua loved it there. The Winding Way's crew were a chaotic lot, but people were happy there. They had their disputes, but ultimately, the Way's crew were a tight-knit bunch who would help each other out in any situation. It was from his travels with them that Joshua realised that happiness could only come from the self, enjoying the experiences life had to offer. From then on, Joshua decided he'd continue travelling and enjoy life as it was!
After two years of travelling all over Reial, he met a young doctor called Ness Lakehaven on board the Winding Way. It took more than one and a half years, but thanks to the doctor's influence, Joshua slowly changed and allowed himself to become more attached to the Winding Way and its crew, even signing up to become a strategist despite disliking even the idea of work (although Joshua would claim it was to escape false suspicions from the Bellcius Intelligence Division). After various events that eventually culminated in the decommisioning of the Winding Way, Joshua returned to Melior with Ness before they found the Convoy and signed to board it. But the Convoy was a ship Joshua was unfamiliar with, and because he wasn't yet comfortable about putting his trust in a crew he (mostly) didn't know, Joshua first signed on to the Convoy as a passenger instead of a member of the crew.
