[ Character's Age ] : Unknown canon age. He looks 15, but his true form looks anywhere from late teens to mid-twenties. I'm gonna go with 19 as his true age.
[ Series ] : The World Ends With You
[ Canon Point ] : Post-Game, more than one week after the month long Game.

[ History ] :
People in high positions like Joshua like to play Games with high stakes.

[ Personality ] :
Joshua is a guy who can talk to almost anyone, and is more than capable of appearing to be quite amiable while he navigates the social waters. But honestly, most of the time he prefers to mock or troll people... when he isn't asking them questions that are designed to give him insight into the way they think. He can be especially grating when he's actively trying to irritate you, as he has a knack for hitting peoples' irritation buttons, even the ones they didn't know they had. He's the kind of guy who will ask someone how they'd solve a problem, then mock their answer. He's the sort who will ask personal questions but dodge every attempt to ask the same of him. He's the type of person who can lay on the flattery in one moment, then take on a ridiculously condescending manner in the next. He's someone who doesn't think twice about misleading people through their own assumptions of his own wonderfully vague words. He's the unreliable party member who'd be away playing mini-games instead of helping to save the world.

Laziness appears to be his next worst trait after his condescention and mockery, as he never seems to expend anything more than minimal effort required to achieve a goal. In fact, it can be hard to believe he can dedicate himself to any cause; it's hard to tell whether he's taking anything seriously, when everything seems to be a game to him. When he steers conversation towards more philosophical waters, he can come off as quite the cynic, often pointing out the flaws in humanity. He seems perfectly content playing the role of devil's advocate. All in all, his prickly attitude doesn't foster trust, only frustration, and when he seems to be less than interested in silly things like friends, it would be easy to believe he's not a big fan of people.

However, the truth is the complete opposite; Joshua is deeply invested in humanity. People are fascinating, no doubt about it, and are capable of great things! While he often makes comments designed to provoke a reaction from people, he also puts forward questions that he wants people to think about, and open their minds to more than just their own thoughts and beliefs. But just because he wants people to realise there's more to the world doesn't mean he'll sugar-coat things; he's a firm believer in being cruel to be kind, and when you're a near god of the city you rule, you tend to have a warped sense of what is acceptable cruelty.

Because killing someone is okay if you have the power to resurrect them afterwards, right?

Joshua's position as the Composer, someone with powers that can only be called god-like, means that he is the primary (unseen) overseer of the city he takes care of, Shibuya. And as he watches over his city, sometimes he despairs over how narrow-minded and closed off its residents are. He wants people to realise there's more out there, that there's other things beyond just their point of view. He wants people to see and realise some of the things he does, and it frustrates him that to him, the vast majority just won't open their eyes to the greater world. But. There's one thing he knows for certain. He can't force it. He can't force people to think the way he wants them to, because that's what will destroy humanity's vast diversity. The same diversity he loves so much. The same diversity that makes him love Shibuya so much; it's the ward that is famous for its ever-changing nature.

Yet, as much as Joshua loves and embraces change in the city he rules, he stubbornly refuses to allow change to happen to himself. His position as Composer is an incredibly isolated one, only really allowing contact with two of the other people helping to run his city, which doesn't allow for much opportunity to mingle with other people. And he doesn't mind it so much; start getting attached and he can't do his job as an objective observer and city fixer. As a result, he's frustratingly evasive about divulging things close to his heart, and often uses his words to both mislead and inflict doubt upon what he's truly thinking. While he is more than happy to mingle amongst other people, often he'll keep himself emotionally distant from the people he meets. His barbed remarks are just another way of keeping people at an arm's distance from him, even though there's a part of him, deep down, that doesn't want to be alone.

But if someone or something does manage to close that distance and become something that he actually cares about, Joshua can be incredibly protective and possessive, capable of going to great lengths to do what he thinks is best for them. No one is allowed to meddle in the affairs of his things without his permission.

No one.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
His greatest flaws all lie in his rather prickly personality. Aside from the fact half the time he goes out of his way to irritate other people (leaving him with very few people he could call friends), his position as Composer tends to invite an incredibly stubborn streak when it comes to matters close to his heart, and sometimes that can make him take actions that cause more harm than good. In some ways, he's just like a child who throws a tantrum and chucks his toys at the wall when things don't go the way he wants it to, even though he knows he'll come back and pick up the broken pieces later.

Joshua's full abilities are unknown, but due to his position as Composer, he has incredible power over the city he rules over, to the point he is virtually the god of its 'underworld'. However, many of his abilities won't be accessible or relevant in Vatheon, so his remaining powers list is:
  • Telekinesis. Using his cell phone as a focii, Joshua can move things as large as a kangaroo around as well as himself (in a form of levitation). He can also rain junk like vending machines, traffic cones or bicycles on some poor sap's head. The truth is that he doesn't actually need his phone to do these things, but he likes to keep cards up his sleeve. Additionally, his telekinesis is able to stop projectiles like bullets, but if he's going to do something as drastric as that, he's not even going to bother pretending with the phone.
  • Light beams. They are capable of vaporising those unfortunate enough to be caught in them... in Shibuya's 'underworld', anyway. In Vatheon, they function more like a blast of light energy/magic, hurting more if the target is a spirit or susceptible to light. Again, he will appear to use his cell phone to create these light beams, but he does not actually need the phone to rain light and visions of angels down on you.
  • Telepathy. Joshua is able to read the surface thoughts of others, as well as go deeper to know what is most precious to a person at the current moment in time. But should he come under the scrutiny of other mind readers, he can wall off his own thoughts and show them the thoughts he wants them to see. Additionally, he can remove, alter, or bring back memories, as well as imprint ideas into people's minds, though he has no control over what people will do with said idea.
  • Read someone's soul. In Vatheon, it functions more like him being able to sense anything unusual about someone's soul, and will generally be quite unspecific. However, he'll have difficulty gauging someone's Imagination in Vatheon, because it's such a vaguely-defined concept in canon, let alone RP.
  • Suppress his power. Most of the time, Joshua appears as his younger form, where much of his power is hidden. However, when he's no longer hiding his Composer power levels, he takes on an older, more ethereal form, and the power behind his abilities shoot through the roof. For those without a strong spiritual connection, this form may also be difficult to perceive, ranging from 'completely invisible' to 'an unclear, ghostly appearance'. Incidentally, it's possible for him to be used as a power battery by others, with seemingly no ill effects on him.
... yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyeah he can still do a lot. But will he actually use these abilities? For the most part, no. Joshua's not the Composer of Vatheon, so he's not going to have the same sense of responsibility or willingness to expend effort in taking care of a city that isn't his. Besides, he's not one to reveal his hand unless he absolutely has to; he likes to appear mostly normal to the masses. Activating god-mode can really take the fun out of a game, after all, and there's a certain thrill in being able to manipulate people through his words alone. It should also be noted that because he is missing certain powers in Vatheon, he is actually very susceptible to being punched in the face; Joshua may be powerful, but most of them do very little to protect him should he be the target of attack. Very much a squishy wizard.

Additionally, his phone has a camera that can take 3 photographs per day of the past, though in Vatheon, it seems to be giving him images with questionable accuracy. Silly unreliable piece of junk. He should've known better than to trust in angelic goods given to him free of charge.

[ Other Important Facts ] :
He has bedroom eyes all the time.

Stuff he normally can do, but can't in Vatheon are:
  • Shift between planes of existence. He can still adjust his vibe (see: suppress his power), but the RG/UG distinction isn't quite the same in Vatheon. Also related, world hopping, though he can't do the latter after leaving his native world anyway.
  • Macro-Game related powers. E.g. Issuing missions and timers, creating invisible walls, promoting people to Reapers, reviving the dead, etc.
  • Related to Macro-Game powers, entry fee related powers that are not connected to the mind. E.g. changing someone else's appearance.
  • Altering environmental Soul, i.e. no "summoning" Noise.
  • Completely paralyse other people
  • Use his clairvoyant foresight.
  • Transform into a Noise form. (A Noise form for Joshua isn't canon, but given that he's pretty much the highest ranked Reaper, it's highly likely he has one that he never uses)
