History/Personality: When you've lived a pretty long time, of course you've done some interesting things. But most people can't list having killed their entire family in there. Well, except their sister. Of course. Pretty crazy when he was younger, see -- pretty crazy indeed. Killed a lot of people, made a lot of enemies, even got a little nickname to go with the crazy. Nobody messes with you when you're called the Sword Demon. Trained a kid right in his own footsteps and nearly killed him because he got too strong.
But, see, all that's in the past now. Laid down his sword, only takes it up to protect people, and even then, a bit reluctantly. Called the Saint of Swords by others but he doesn't accept it. He's just an average guy that's been in a couple of wars. Let's not talk about how good he used to be (still is, but won't admit to it). But see, now he's got something to fight for again. Got a little niece and a brother in law. Gotta fight for them, especially since his sister died. So much for settling down and having a nice, normal life, huh?
He won't train you, but he'll let you stick around and learn. He's not all that keen on fighting, but he'll do it if he's gotta. Oh, and he's really sorry if he killed a relative of yours way back when. Like, really. But come on, he's like forty years old -- are you really going to beat him up when he pleads insanity? It's the truth, you know. After all, the man can't lie.
Animal: Cooper's Hawk
First Person Sample: Hmm? Wha-
Where am I?
I couldn't have been drunk, I had Fir with me-
Oh my head... And if I had her with me, then where is she now-
Guess I'll have a look around.
Third Person Sample: Joints creaking just a bit (weren't mornings wonderful?) and something in that haystack had been poking his back so now he had a lovely crick on it. Joys of not being as young as he used to be... He stood up and dusted off, looking around. Okay, it's a barn. There's a horse over there, rakes, pitchforks... nothing out of the ordinary except that this wasn't quite where he'd gone to sleep. He wasn't so silly as to call out and draw attention to himself in the event that he shouldn't be here, but nothing wrong with having a look around?
So he pushes the door open and peeks out. Coast is clear and why is he acting like a silly teenager afraid of getting into trouble for being in the neighbors' barn? Oh, right! Because people tend to object to other people being in their barns without permission.
Well, Karel, what now? Might as well find out who lives here and get some directions... This didn't look like Bern at all, and certainly not Sacae.

Character: Karel
Series: Fire Emblem 6
Abilities: A master of swordplay, fairly well-versed in hand-to-hand combat as well, decent strategist
Personality/Background summary:
His life when he was younger isn't something that Karel remembers fondly. He did a lot of killing, that's for sure. As a young man- teenager, really- Karel killed his whole family save for his younger sister. He killed them, stole the family heirloom sword, and then went on what could be described as a rampage, seeking out any fighters stronger than himself.
Karel killed them all.
Anyone at, higher than, or near his level at all was on the list, and he was deadly good at what he did. He earned himself the title of Sword Demon for his accomplishments. He didn't just go after single fighters, he took on entire units of soldiers by himself for little reason at all, aside from proving his own strength. Anyone who even got in the way might have just been killed out of convenience.
This went on for some time. He fought in an army and helped to save the world from a madman and his dragons along the way, even if it wasn't his motive. No, it was more that the pay was good and it gave him an excuse to fight anyone that wore the colors of the opposing side. Karel took on a student and was reunited with his sister during that time as well. Both, he drove away to protect them from himself, the first signs of humanity that he had shown in years. He picked up other acquaintances, but they were few and far between. Who wanted to be in the company of someone who could- and quite possibly would kill them without a second thought?
Then, after the war, something happened. Nobody knew what, but Karel seemingly dropped off the map as a threat. At least, nobody saw him. People still knew the name, though he'd renounced his killing ways. He was given the new name, the Saint of Swords, against his wishes. Really, Karel had just found a home in a small village in the mountains of Bern, attempting to keep off the public radar as much as possible. Then, twenty years after the first war, he was dragged back into the fighting again, this time for his family's sake. His brother-in-law and niece convinced him to join the army. But he was a different man. The long, frivolous hair that he'd kept, almost as a means of showing off, was cut short, and the fire that had been in his eyes in his younger days was gone. He was weathered by age, but still strong.
He wasn't broken. He'd finally settled.
Karel is generally cool and collected. He dislikes conflict, but understands the need to resolve it once its there. He's still a competent warrior, even if he tries to stay away from violence as a sole means of conflict resolution now. He's what other people would consider to be eccentric, though. Karel just does things without much regard for opinions of others. He seems to have a sort of "do as you like so long as you don't harm others" approach to most of what he does. He has a tendency to never give straight answers to anything, but rather to give answers just ambiguous enough to make people figure things out for themselves. He doesn't like to teach. He prefers that people find the answers for themselves, if with a bit of prodding and pointing in the right direction.

Fire Emblem Wikia - his section is the second, since he appeared in two games with vastly different personalities between them.
FE6 supports - a huge amount of characterization in these games comes from support conversations - his are the very last links on the page.
Affiliation: Trainer - Gentleman class
Personality: Karel falls under a few categories - reformed crazy, warrior poet, strong-silent type... A lot of this involves his attempts to make up for his past actions - his past very bad actions. He wasn't a pleasant person when he was younger, and this follows him in many of the people he meets. Little things will remind him of who he used to be, and he'll try to avoid it, put it to the side, and downplay his skills almost as a way of denying to himself that he would still be capable of being a bloody killer if he so chose. So while he is an extremely capable person, Karel dislikes emphasizing it.
Aside from that, though, he is a fairly easygoing man, settling into life in his 40's in the middle of rural Bern. He likes his family, but isn't overly close with them, and while he's not opposed to helping people out when they need it, Karel isn't the sort to go butting into problems that he doesn't consider to be his business. He tends towards the idea that people should do as much as they can to solve their own problems and find their own answers, as opposed to letting others do things for them. He'll definitely get someone out of a tough spot if it looks like they're doing poorly, though. He'll probably flip into teacher mode and tell them that they need to be more careful next time and how to be so and blah blah blah stop lecturing me, old man and so on.
He's very aware, possibly overly so, of his shortcomings, but will push himself past his limits for something he believes in or else to protect someone weaker. He was recruited into the army while defending his village, and only his niece or brother-in-law were capable of convincing him to leave that duty. He's cool, collected, doesn't just jump into things. Fighting isn't his favorite thing to do, but he does understand the necessity of it and as such, will do what he can. This is actually quite a lot more than he leads people to believe.
One could also call Karel a bit eccentric. He sort of does his own thing and doesn't care much for gossip and the like. He has his own moral code that isn't too far off from others' but can sometimes get strange looks. He can be a bit disconnected from the world around him.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Considering the time and place that he's from, Karel is quite the outdoorsman. He knows how to set up an effective camp, whether water is safe to drink or not and how to make it so, how to read the weather, and he is also an accomplished tracker. If he wants to find a Jigglypuff, it is very likely that he would be able to do so without having to run into 98246129619 Pidgeys first. He's fairly good at identifying what is and isn't edible, but considering the... different flora and fauna here, he is likely to wind up hallucinating after eating some berries. He has some field medical knowledge due to being in battle and normally being alone in battle. Karel certainly is not genius-level smart, but he is fairly clever, especially with regards to intuition.
Strength/weakness? This man cannot lie. At least, he will have a great amount of difficulty doing so. It's never made clear whether it's some magical bloodline thing keeping it so or else that it's something that they just don't do, but the entire race he comes from just plain doesn't lie. Exaggerate, perhaps, but nothing outright. And even if it is a magical thing, due to a lifetime of being unable to do so, Karel will still be... painfully honest.
His weaknesses, though, are striking. One could nearly call him depressed with as much as he thinks and broods on his past failings. It hampers him from utilizing himself to his full potential and can make him come across very easily as gloomy or just too much into navel-gazing for his own benefit. He can ramble a bit when he gets into a self-deprecating mood. A weakness that sometimes falls under strength is his protective streak. If Karel gets it into his head to be attached to or to keep someone safe, he will do it at very high risk to himself, due to his thinking that his own life is not worth much. This gives him an almost death-seeker-like quality.
But in Pokémon world, it's really unlikely that he's going to get into huge fights or anything, I'm suspecting. He might try to physically block damage to one of his critically-injured 'mons to his own demise, but then to the Pokémon center with him!
Pokemon
Starter: Gastly, female, Timid-natured, probably horrible IVs, if it matters. Karel's Gastly is very attached to him and stays quite close by, possibly due to her weakness and timidity about battles. She dislikes strongly being in her Pokeball. Sometimes she will float through his face and scare people, which he finds irritating and would very much like her to stop doing :| Named "Alpha."
Password: salmon, riceballs
Samples
(Please note that both samples must take place in Route_29’s setting.)
First Person Sample:
[ have a baffled looking man in very gentlemanly attire standing outside of a house into which he cannot return ]
A bit like being born, is it not?
[ he says it to nobody in particular as he looks down at the little talking thing in his hand ]
Now... what clever mage thought up such a thing? Perhaps you will tell me a bit about things? Now if I point you at this-
[ Karel recoils slightly but regains himself as it reads out the information concerning the Gastly at his side ]
So that is what you are called, fellow... Or- lady, as it is. I suppose we're together, then...
Third Person Sample:
The first thing that Karel did upon being ejected from the house - something that happened in almost a complete blur for him - was take in his surroundings. Small village, surrounded by lush forest and seemingly a lake to the east... And not terribly much else. Things did seem off, though. Structures he didn't recognize the purpose of, the strange talking device in his hand, the disembodied head floating next to him? That last one bothered him the most, especially as close as it - she, as he would later realize - was remaining. It seemed to be on the same team with him, though. That was a positive, wasn't it? Especially in such a bizarre place, to have another with him as opposed to just going out into it alone would almost certainly prove beneficial.
"So..." he said after a moment of examining that Pokegear in his hands, "I suppose it's just us, then? A fine kidnapping someone's put together."
The Gastly bobbed in the air, fangs showing clearly through its open mouth.
"Not much to be done about it now, is there?" Karel sighed and looked up at the sky. It couldn't have been past noon. It didn't look here like anywhere in Elibe. It disturbed him, but on a lower level. It would be no good to run around being frantic. Such behavior wouldn't get him back home. If this was where he was, then clearly there was either a reason for him to be here that he needed to fulfill, or else it was blind luck, and fretting would do no good.
Not that Karel wanted to admit that after waking up in foreign clothes, in a room that wasn't his and so on, he'd had quite the moment of panic before getting himself together...
"Well, you are from here, perhaps?" he asked his Gastly.
The second instance of bobbing in air was reassuring to him.
"Then... I suppose you would know more about it, wouldn't you? Until I have a feel for things, I am at your mercy."
Karel nearly jumped back as it whizzed around him, seemingly happy. Well... at least it- she didn't dislike him?
"Do I name you?" he asked, and before he could move on to the second part of the question, his Gastly was nodding enthusiastically.
"I see..." Naming things had never been something he'd even considered. Not with regards to children, and he'd never held onto horses long enough to give them names, so perhaps nobody would fault him for the lack of creativity.
"You are the first I've met here, so... Alpha," he said, chuckling to himself.
