... that her dad killed her sister. He was a drunk that beat them up and did crazy, crazy shit. He would hold a loaded gun to the woman's forehead and ask her to come up with at last one reason why he shouldn't pull the trigger

Is he at least in jail?

I contemplated many times about the step dad and that I had to do it while I was still a juvenile. But Louisiana will convict a 12 year old for a captiol crime.

In the end it wouldn't have been worth it and I have chosen a wonderful companion based on the fact that he is the exact opposite.

I think he's dead now, although he was given a lenient sentence for the crime. It was many years ago, and I guess it was considered less of a crime to do that shit to your own family than it was to someone you were completely unrelated to. As if domestic violence was somehow reduced to "a simple misunderstanding". We got a long way to on this country on these kinds of problems....cultural innovations like women's shelters are so important and useful, but are only the very beginning.
