Who is Marwood, is that I? It's about the absurdity in I's life, the conclusion of a decade of decadence, the avoidance and eventual confrontation with reality. etc etc.
As far as Withnail's sexuality, I never really read that far into the convo with Monty but after reading this I read a post regarding this very same question on IMDB. Here is one response that seems relevant:
Hola, I always had the impression that Withnail was in love with Marwood, and Marwood rejected him previously. Which perhaps Withnail enjoyed small revenge in telling Monty the opposite. After Marwoods unfortunate incident with Monty and in the argument with Withnail that follows, I believe he puts a lot of accent in the way he says 'I can't believe you told him that I rejected you ' as if to suggest the opposite is true. He also seems quite keen to get into bed with him the night they believe they are being stalked by the poacher. And as you said the second woeful 'Nor women neither', final nail in the coffin. But no I don'
( ... )
Well after I wrote that comment I diddled around on IMDB a little more because I can't help myself. And another poster was like "I think Withnail is supposed to represent the 60s and I represents the 70s" based on the fact that in the book, after the park Withnail goes home and shoots himself. Interesting!
I dunno, I personally haven't read too far into the "message" of this movie probs cause its AMAZING. and doesn't even need a message!
