It wasn’t supposed to be like this. The world couldn’t be this unfair to end the play they had been acting out since their birth this way….could it? Crimson flowers blossomed along midnight, the petals whisking into the air as the world blazed backwards. Crystals shined like a saint’s wings as they fell from the face of an angel, the screams of denial rising like the tides of time. Hard stone met the back of the fallen as he clutched at the gaping wound that would take him into that sweet night. When had things gone so wrong? At what point had he stepped onto this path of destruction? Everything seemed to be blurring together he couldn’t grasp what it was that had caused the downward spiral. But he had too, if only to carry that knowledge into the light. He fought with the sluggish mind that was starting to shut down tearing his way through the halls of memory. Voices crowded the dying man’s mind, the whispers of events long gone.

“You really have no choice; they’ll do him in if you don’t.” “What the hell is with you?!” “You alchemists are all the same, you claim to be moralistic, but one good push and you drench your hands in sin.” “You are…my Blade.” “As you wish…” “Its okay, its not like I have anything left.” “You’d never hurt me…”
As if some god above pitied him what he wanted rose up like a phoenix sweeping him back to a time when innocence was something he could hold close….

“Al! Al! Where are you?” The Full Metal alchemist, the people’s alchemist as some called him set his hands on his hips and drew his brows down in worry. It wasn’t like his sibling to run off, especially when there was a library to peruse through. He frowned and ran a white gloved hand through soft sun gold tresses as his mind tried to solve the puzzle presented to it. How could a walking and clanking might he add suit of armor disappear like smoke? It made no sense no matter which way he turned the idea. Edward sighed heavily and shook his head his braid swaying with the shift of his head. “Come on Al this isn’t funny!” But then when did his brother ever play a nasty trick like this? Never. It wasn’t in the gentle younger Elric to scare anyone like this. That’s what Ed was feeling even if his mind didn’t want to admit it just yet. The elder son of Trisha Elric shut his eyes tightly before he strode off to go ask around. How could he have missed the other leaving Central’s library?

Did he wrap himself that deep in the world of alchemic figures and worldly knowledge? Ed cursed his focus for the first time in a good while his booted feet rapidly drumming on the cobble stones. The state alchemist darted like a gun shot from the alleyway he’d been checking. The teenager skidded around the corner about taking himself out with a street sign. That was the problem with rushing blindly, but at the moment the boy wasn’t stopping to consider his flaws. Not that he ever did, okay he did but that didn’t make him a masochist. Maybe it would be wise to check the military headquarters? Al liked to talk with Hawkeye when he was busy sometimes. He steered his feet that direction excusing himself as he accidentally bumped into someone. If he’d taken a moment to look back he’d have seen the man he bumped into was not one he tended to like that much. Envy watched the boy race off with a sour expression on his pale features.

Headquarters wasn’t far, just a hop down the block really. Ed could see the building’s roof cresting over everything else. It seemed to be the dominating force in Central. Few buildings had the majesty of the government offices. It was a place the teenager couldn’t really hate even though it reminded him of the heavy collar he’d accepted for the sake of his brother. Well to be truthful the boy hated it, just some of the people within were redeemable. He flashed his silver state watch to the guards as he streamed past not that he really needed to. The Elric was like a target with that red coat of his flapping in the wind of his own passing. If the boy wasn’t careful he’d about kill himself on those stone steps leading up to the main doors. But fear for the younger brother had set in and reasoning with it had long since flown out the alchemist’s window.

Edward flung open the ordinate doors and strode briskly inside letting his bright eyes travel over everything trying to find some tiny sign his sibling was around. Nothing, just the surprised stare of the secretary of this main office greeted the young man. He huffed softly drawing in fresh oxygen to his lungs before darting past. The blonde felt he didn’t have to explain himself, the main office never paid attention to who came and went anyways. Only if someone entered with force and was loud enough to be noticed by the lazy staff. He shoved aside his gratitude of the moment for the lax security as he neared his commander’s office. Just as Ed reached for the doorknob to open the door, a polite cough made him look up from his task. The Furher stood calmly just to his right seeming to have come from nowhere. “Ah FullMetal I’ve been expecting you. This way,” Any protests the lad would have had were snapped behind steel walls. He couldn’t tick off the head of the military not and live that is. Despite popular belief Ed did know when to fold his cards and leave the poker table. You just had to have the best hand to get him to do it. Reckless? Perhaps, but the boy did lead a life of strife and hardship. Not that the Elric’s temper did him any good in that regards.

They walked quietly through the halls earning curious looks from on lookers even as they saluted their leader. It made the FullMetal alchemist nervous. Sure the boy was easy to spot but right now he felt like he had a bull’s-eye painted on his chest. Shoot here to kill. It wasn’t a pleasant picture for a young man who had an active imagination. He about jumped when the elder man set a hand on his shoulder and steered him inside his office. Ed expected the other to ask him to sit but they walked past the desk. Now that was odd, not to mention threw the blonde off. “Don’t worry, this won’t take long.” The other male’s statement set the hairs on the back of the teenager’s neck prickling. Alarm bells started to ring in the back of Edward’s head as the other drew book out of his shelf. One of the wooden shelves slid aside revealing a hidden elevator the doors of it sliding apart smoothly.

He was out of league. The warrior knew it the moment he was lightly guided inside and the doors clapped shut. But for the life of him, the teenager couldn’t figure out what felt odd about all this. Why would the president of the military and all of Ametris want to talk with him in a private place? Dimly he thought of what he knew of the man. He was shadowy yet seemed to want what was best for the country. King Bradley was unusually fast a demon on the field of blade with those swords. He had a son, and appeared to be a good father. Ed felt this picture that had been painted by his mind’s eye was too perfect. When things were too good something had to be rotten beneath the surface. Cautiously the golden eyed male leaned against the side of the elevator. “Sir, where are we going?” The question hung in the air the tension mounting before the high ranking man smiled his uncovered eye sliding shut. “To a meeting there’s no need to worry about it Full Metal.”

Edward Elric couldn’t help but worry. Alphonse was missing, the Furher of all people wanted to talk to him, and things seemed suddenly ready to take a drastic turn for the worst. As the young man turned to ask another inquiry their ride came to halt. The doors slid aside revealing a well lit mansion the polished wood flooring reflecting his surprised features right back at him. “Nii-san!” The elder son of Trish Elric’s heart stopped the cold hand of dread seizing it at the same moment. He looked up slowly feeling like a doll that was moving only because of a puppeteer’s coaxing. Al sat on the floor with metal chains ensnaring his arms to his sides. Lust stood right beside him her claws brought to bear lightly touching the blood rune within the armor. The boy started to pelt forward only to have a hand seize hold of his wrist and stop him short. “ALU!” What the hell was going on?! Ed looked behind him to demand what was going on but froze. King Bradley’s expression was as cold as ice his dark emerald eye looking almost violet in the overhead lighting.

“You would do well to calm yourself Edward, we wouldn’t want anything to happen to your brother now would we?” The teenager turned his head to face the voice that sounded faintly familiar. The woman that rested her hand on the banister of the staircase was indeed familiar. “Lyra?” The cold laugh that escaped the seemingly young female was far from nice. She stepped delicately down the stairs her soft lavender dress fluttering as she moved. A low sneering voice just to Ed’s right however answered his confused question. “No O-chibi-san that’s Dante-sama.” How the hell was /that/ possible?! “That’s enough Envy.” The sin slipped from the shadows his dark eyes holding loathing in their depths for the golden eyed youth. “But Dant-“ “I’m very much alive Edward, how and why you need not worry about. You have tasks to complete.” The boy looked at his brother who had gone silent and felt the color drain from his face. “You’re-“ “’That person’ the controller of the homunculus, yes I am. Quit stalling boy. You’ll do what I say lest you wish your brother in pieces?”

Ed bit his lip so hard it started to bleed. This felt like the Fifth lab all over again. That self same choice was once again presented to him, this time there would be no saving grace. “Don’t do it nii-san!” Al’s voice seemed so far away as the Furher let go of him. He stepped forward slowly a surreal quality blanketing the world. “I can’t…not even for Alu.” The busty younger sin sighed softly tapping a claw against her lips. “He said the same thing before Dante-sama. I doubt it will change.” The old alchemist frowned her own fingers drumming lightly on the banister. There had to be a way to make this talented young man do as she desired. As the woman looked about trying to get her thoughts in order her dark eyes fell on the eldest inhuman beast. A slow wicked parody of a smile graced her elegant features before flowing into her cruel gaze. “Well then we’ll have to ‘fix’ that. Envy, you’ve been nothing but a failure here of late. I’ll give you a chance to redeem yourself,” As the brackish haired warrior looked up Dante pointed at the boy. “Turn that moral bound alchemist into an assassin of your caliber. This is your last chance, I trust you don’t wish to end up like Greed.” To give the man credit he didn’t explode at first. Envy stamped his foot furiously and gestured widely with his hands.

“Me? Train the damn pipsqueak?!” He growled low defiance coloring his cat like violets with vivid color. The woman scowled quietly her slender fingers drumming louder on the wood railing. “Don’t question me. Or I’ll take care of you right now and obtain a new Envy.” Lust and King Bradley snickered at the other who had obviously fallen out of favor. He threw them both glares that promised a sound reminder of who was the eldest. They ignored him. Homunculus functioned like a pack, however their pack leader with Dante. When one of them failed their leader and was on their last leg so to speak any threats from them was nothing. The former son of Dante had lost almost all the status he’d had not even Gluttony listened to his orders any longer. Infuriated the lightly clad emerald black haired male stalked forward seizing Edward by the collar. “Fine I’ll teach the brat.” He hissed quietly and threw the room a look that plainly said this wasn’t over.

The blonde struggled against the other’s iron grip till Lust tapped the blood rune threateningly. A sense of utter defeat hit the boy at last like a heavy brick to the stomach. He sagged in the cruel beast’s grip letting himself be lead off his golden eyes on his brother. The other looked back at the silent beaten young man his crimson orbs for eyes etched forever in the elder’s mind. He’d failed him, their quest was over.
