It's definitely true that these are hugely complex issues---too big for one single discussion. It's probably why I try to narrow the topic a bit when attacking it. I think I opt to focus on pain because it seems to be the factor that pops up the most in these sorts of discussions. I should add "death" as well; most of the arguments against eating meat deal with either the animals' quality of life, or, more basically, humans' right to kill/eat other living beings.
