Welp, I've just seen the final ep of Soul Eater. It wasn't the perfect ending, but it was admittedly better than I was expecting. Though granted, those were pretty low expectations giving how BONES has handled the latter half of the series.
It all ended with Maka defeating Asura, as heavily foreshadowed. Sigh. Much as I love Maka, I don't like how overpowered she's been handled in the anime. But that's a rant for another time. And since I was expecting Maka to be the Big Shonen Savior, it didn't seem quite so bad somehow. Or maybe I'm just easily pleased. :P
Some thoughts:
-I'm glad that the "Kishin Hunter" that Maka pulled from her rear end didn't succeed. The preview made it look like it would. That would have been an incredibly crappy and predictable ending.
-MAKA. IS. A. WEAPON. A WEAPON. SERIOUSLY, WHERE DID THAT COME FROM. Well, okay, I know that her dad's a weapon and all, and it seems to be something she can only use when she has no consciousness to speak of, but still. It came outta nowhere. Buuuuuuut I thought it was kinda cool anyway. XP;
-Maka's screams when the Kishin was crushing her abdomen were blood-curling. I couldn't help but grimace in sympathy. D:
-And so the Kishin was defeated...by a punch. A regular old punch. Seriously. WTF. XD I'm surprised I'm not more disappointed by this than I am. Maybe it was Asura's expression when he realized that he was gonna die from something so simple. He was like "WTF IS THIS SHIT!?" XD Though come to think of it, nobody had ever actually tried just punching him before. I know that the whole punching thing was supposed to be about how Maka's courage is stronger than Kishin's fear, which I guess I'm fine with, but...come on. A punch.
-Shinigami's alive! :D Admittedly, I was dumb enough to think he was actually dead. XD;
-And so the episode ends with Maka jumping down from that pillar, and the end credits roll with a shot of everyone just sitting around staring at nothing. No epilogue. :( Come on, BONES! Would it have really hurt to show a bit of the aftermath? I would have at least liked to see Kid and Shini's reunion. Same goes for Maka and Chrona.
Overall, I definitely enjoyed this anime. It had its flaws, no doubt, and was rather rushed towards the end, but it was enjoyable for me all throughout. And I still have the manga, heh.
And so, in the immortal words of Strong Bad, "IT'S OVER!!"
