While I don't think Sandy ever truly lectured Seth, there were instances throughout the four seasons where he would be very parental. In the Model Home when Seth is about to runaway, the time Seth was rebelling with Alex and the time Sandy confronts him about using drugs pop into mind immediately. Still, it is Sandy rationalizing his "assertion of power over Ryan." As in parental power. It still comes down to the wrong kind of attention and I'm afraid that's what Ryan takes away from this, Well, let's hope this misunderstanding doesn't spiral out of control and Sandy can right things with Ryan....
I remember Sandy being parental in a more "fatherly" and emotional way, but not as in a, excuse the awful comparison, dean of discipline (in the real sense) way. But I could be wrong. I had wished he would raise his voice and lay down the law to Seth about behaviors that occurred far too frequently and an attitude that could be so condescending, self-centered and hurtful, but he came across as far too indulgent and sympathetic. Could be my memory with so many disappointments. The "asthma" scene stands out as a good one, but one about supportive parenting and a show of love and support and understanding while connecting, not one where he was reprimanding while doing anything but being open and trying to have a real exchange. I do hope something stops the spiral. When Sandy is at his best with Ryan, it's the one relationship Ryan has that he can count on. When Sandy is so pontifical and closed off and sees someone other than Ryan, there's just no one and nothing.
For the most part, I think that Sandy was parental in a "fatherly" way. Actually, I think it's far more affective parenting than the Dean of Discipline mode. And yes, most of the time he was too indulgent and too lenient with Seth... and Ryan. Of course, f,d,f and it was a teen soap! Oh, your icon? It scares me! Hee. Love that one.
Good chapter.Update soon.Poor Sandy and Ryan. They're getting their signals crossed, and that's not good. I hope Ryan eventually calls Sandy by Dad because we did get that at the end of the episode.
Ryan should really learn how to talk and express his emotions! But this time, I sort of don't blame him. Sandy was sort of hard on him ;) Thanks for reading and commenting.
