This year, I have decided that I have altogether too many friends. Or, rather, that too many friends are going to be at various Holiday parties, including the one I'm hosting. And, being a student, I cannot possibly afford presents for everyone I WISH I could give presents to (and I acknowledge the fact that this is not reasonable). However, the ( Read more... )

We always eat snickerdoodles at the holidays - don't know if anybody else thinks of them as holiday cookies or not.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups white sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons white sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F
Cream together butter, shortening, 1 1/2 cups sugar, the eggs and the vanilla. Blend in the flour, cream of tartar, soda and salt. Shape dough by rounded spoonfuls into balls.
Mix the 2 tablespoons sugar and the cinnamon. Roll balls of dough in mixture. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.
Bake 8 to 10 minutes, or until set but not too hard. Remove immediately from baking sheets.

I have a friend who is allergic to nuts, and she always goes wild when I make anything with chocolate in it, because she can't normally have chocolate for fear of cross-contamination on the production lines. I get safe chocolate from http://www.vermontnutfree.com/ and bake it into all sorts of things. Something that might be holiday-oriented would be making shortbread cookies of various shapes and dipping them half in melted chocolate.

... That's actually a really good idea. And pretty. And I live in Montreal, so I'm fairly sure I can find nut-free chocolate somewhere here, too! Thanks for the idea!
