Title: Every night Vince has ever known
Fandom: Queer As Folk (UK)
Summary: It's a moment in a long night.
Notes: Don't ask me why I'm randomly writing QaF fic for the first real time. It just came to me while clubbing the other night.

Every night Vince has ever known

It's a moment in a long night.

It's every night Vince has ever known.

They're dancing, a bit like prats, because that's the fun way to dance, but they're dancing and minding their own business. Minding your own business is a hard thing to do in Babylon, but practice makes perfect. It's for moments like these that Vince lives, he feels, although that might be the E talking. But it's just the two of them, mates for so long, mates forever, or at least something that seems like forever to gay men approaching thirty (not that either one of them likes to be reminded of that).

Being bumped into can't be helped, not when you're dancing in such a crowded club, and where else is there to go? The Village isn't that big, really, and in Canal Street after a while everybody knows everybody. This is the guy Stuart shagged three weeks ago, and that's the one Vince turned down for one reason or another last Friday. It would've been a disaster, anyway; Vince can feel these things. Two minutes after he turned him down, Vince was watching Stuart cop off with someone else.

Tonight the crowd is restless, but Vince doesn't mind. He keeps being elbowed, the occasional toe is stepped on, but it's nothing new, and the E's made him light-headed enough to take it all in stride. He sees the irritation in Stuart, however, how it notches up with each bump-in.

And it's the beginning of the end, because as soon as Stuart starts paying attention to something that's not Vince, then Vince fades into the background. It's the way it's always been, so much so that Vince is half convinced it's a law of nature, as certain as attraction and the fact that the Earth orbits the Sun.

The bloke shoulders Stuart on his way to the bar, and that's it, that's the moment, that's Vince's life.

"Oi!" Stuart protests loudly enough for the man to notice, turn around. This is the end, Vince thinks, because the bloke is nice, wide shoulders, slim hipbones, a pretty face and that predatory look in his eyes. He makes back towards Stuart, who's clearly pissed off as he adds something, not loud enough for Vince to hear.

Even when he's pissed off he can pull off the magic words.

It's a bit unfair that he won't ever share them, Vince remarks to himself, when Stuart shags two to three times a week at the least, and Vince is going on three months without copping off now. It's not just unfair, it's tragic. He'd like to find himself trying to get to the back of the throat of a gorgeous man who's randomly bumped into him, once in a while, just like Stuart is doing right now. Shagging the bloke senseless would be a good way to get back at him for the rudeness.

Clearly Stuart shares that opinion.

It's a moment in a long night, and on the heels of that moment Stuart takes off with the stranger. It's a moment in a long night, and it's every night Vince has ever known.
