I keep reading over and over that most Trump voters aren't really racist/sexist/homophobic. They were just voting for this other thing (usually economic concerns, which...well, I won't get into that right now but wtf), and if we just took the time to understand them and listen to them they wouldn't have voted for Trump. They think that is both ( Read more... )

Brilliant analogy. This should be signal-boosted far and wide.

*hugs* I love you and stay safe. I keep thinking a lot about how conditional the whiteness of being Jewish is these days. Especially in light of the swastikas and alt-right rise and that ad at the end of his campaign...that ad. We know how this ends. All I have to do is pull out a copy of the truncated family tree to remind myself.

I'm terrified right now. For myself as a queer, disabled, Jewish woman. For the undocumented immigrants and the Muslims and other brown people who will be the first and most viciously targeted in the coming wave of violence, both state and personal.

And I watch the news roll on acting as though this is an upsetting/disappointing but perfectly normal result and transition of government and we should just hang in there and vote it out next time.

There is nothing normal about this. The enormity of what happened on Tuesday, I can barely wrap my brain around. What's coming. What's already baked in as coming before the fight even starts. I can't breathe.

First of all: breathe! The side of goodness needs breathing representatives!

"The conditional whiteness of being Jewish" -- I never did think of myself as white -- and I understand about this conditionality thing (and also about the truncated family tree). And I'm not far from you in being targeted by the incoming administration (both queer, Jewish, female).

Sending my thoughts of love and safety for you too.

I read your post aloud to my partner and housemate today at lunch. It should be noted that as I read, it got quieter and quieter at the tables around us, until I was pretty much murmuring it (for profanity reasons, haha). I wish very much that I could C&P this and fling it at everyone in the country/world/galaxy. You are the awesomest.

I'm not reaching out to a single fucking one of these assholes. As I said in someone else's LJ today, I have literally no incentive to make nice with people who think that my family, friends, and I are subhumans utterly undeserving of respect, and every time I see one of those hot takes in newspapers or online about how we just have to ~*~understand~*~ the other side, I feel, you know, I do understand them. I understand that they may feel ignored by mainstream politics, or that the economy has left them behind. I also understand that they put their faith in a giant pack of racist, misogynist, fascist howler monkeys, so fuck them all.
