twenty-ten, or two thousand and ten?

Belated Happy New Year, flist! Mine was rung in with Guitar Hero and Scribblenauts, and begun with a daft but awesome film (Sherlock Holmes) and a daft and slightly less awesome book (last one in Cassie Clare's pro trilogy), both accompanied by good food and good friends; if this sets the tone for my year I will be happy.

2009 in terms of academic progress, mostly to make myself feel better about not being where I wanted to be in terms of my thesis )

resolutions, random personal crap, professional nerd studies

I did love the aesthetic of it, no question. I loved that it was a proper grimy industrialised fin-de-siecle, not the gaslight-and-frock-coats or steampunk-y versions that seem to be more popular when you're making late Victorian settings atm.

The plot was kind of fluff, really - which is a shame, because with a really compelling mystery it could have been a great film, not just a good film. As it is, the plot sort of washed over me, and I found myself engaged mostly by the acting and character work, which was very enjoyable.

Oh god, number two should be one of my resolutions as well. If I'm waiting for something to happen...I will just sit down and wait for it to happen while, I don't know, madly refreshing my email (and then not replying to the emails when I get them.) Making better use of downtime sounds like a plan to me!

I saw Sherlock Holmes the other day, and apart from all the action actually making me somewhat nauseous (I don't deal with movement well, apparently) I also really sucked at deducing what went on, and felt kinda bad when my friends were talking about how obvious everything was at the end. How I managed to finish the Ace Attorney series is beyond me, really. XD

Argh, waiting for things just paralyses me; ikwym. Being made to wait is one of my biggest pet peeves, actually, because I become so utterly useless while I'm waiting for something to happen.

Haha, I really like being surprised in films and books, and I also watch very immersively, so I'm purposefully very rarely any steps ahead of the characters in mystery plots :D I suppose it's different with games, where you have to play an active role in deducing what's going on.

Or you can be weak like me and run to GameFAQs every time things get too hard. XD I managed to not consult a walkthrough my second play through, but that might just be evidence my memory is working. It's been a while, though, and I'm planning on somewhat following the plan that some others are over at gyakuten_saiban as goodness knows I've been meaning to go through the games again anyway. Let's see how I go this time. :D
