PairPuri vol 1 Atobe x SanadaKonomi Takeshi's Secret Talk about Atobe & Sanada!!
Konomi: I will reveal everything!!
Konomi-sensei himself talks about the secret behind Atobe and Sanada's creation.
Q: How did the famous phrases "be awed by my prowess" and "don't slack off" come about?
Konomi: Atobe's "be awed by my prowess" came from the time when I was by chance watching an overseas pro wrestling show on cable TV where the wrestler stuck his tongue out and said the line, "HA-HA! Look at my prowess!" I tried arranging that stylishly (laughs).
Sanada's "don't slack off" came from trying to emphasize his austereness by making the old-fashioned him speak lines that even old guys nowadays wouldn't say.
(Notes: Atobe's phrase is "ore-sama no bigi ni yoina" which came from "HA-HA! Ore-sama no bigi wo mina!". Bigi = beautiful skill. Sanada's phrase in the original Japanese is "tarundoru."
Q: How did the special moves "Koori no Sekai" and "Furinkainzanrai" come about?
Konomi: "Koori no Sekai" came from creating a move suited for Atobe that pushes his "Insight" to its ultimate capability.
I did not even have to think about Furinkazan; the perfect move for Sanada came to me. Just an aside, but when "Furinkazan" debuted in the Kantou tournament, I already had the idea of in and rai and set them aside with thoughts of including them later.
(Notes: Translated, "koori no sekai" = world of ice. "Furinkainzanrai" is made up of the characters wind, forest, fire, shadow, mountain, and lightning. "In" = shadow. "Rai" = lightning.)
Q: When you're drawing these two, are there any points that you're fixated on?
Konomi: Because both of them are popular characters and characters that I like, I try to draw their expressions carefully as not to destroy their character.
Q: After drawing for so long, has the way you draw Atobe and Sanada changed?
Konomi: Atobe came off as a flirt, but recently he's become a character who thinks of his underclassmen. Right now, both of them are working hard, but I'm thinking I might add to their characters by making them characters that make us laugh at parts. Also, speaking of Sanada's signature temper that makes him look technocratic, he's more mature about that now, I think. (laughs)
Q: Konomi-sensei, if you changed places with the two of them for a day, what would you do?
Konomi: If I became Atobe, I would like to set off the Hyoutei chant with the snap of a finger. I'm always envious of Suwabe-san for that. (laughs)
If I became Sanada, I would yell, "How are you being gentleman-like!" at Yagyuu for his recent non-gentleman-like actions (trickery). Then, I would make him eat my slap, and when he's still in shock I would look down at him by using "Rai" to run away in a dash. (laughs) Furthermore, I would thickly spread hair gel in Yanagi's hair to make his hair stand up. Then, I would use "Rai"... (the following is omitted).
