The portal had left him on a hillside on an unknown planet. It was dark and apart from the pale light of unknown stars all Simon could see were the faint light of something that might be buildings, or possibly parked vehicles, further down the valley.
He should have brought a torch. As he hadn't, he stumbled over rocks, struggling not to fall or drop his bag. Time seemed to pass so slow when moving near blindly through the night, and when he finally heard voices it took Simon a few seconds to register that they were addressing him.
"Who's there?"
The black silhouettes against the blueish light of a torch gave the impression of armed men.
"I'm Simon Tam," he called back, catching his breath. "I'm a doctor." And thus not much of a threat, or so he hoped. "I'm looking for my sister, River."
"Your sister River?" another one returned, then some quiet talk between the two of them followed, and Simon was unable to make out the words.
Eventually, one of them yelled something into a communicator; more time passed, and only then did a third appear, his boots heavy against the ground below. "Mister Tam?"
Simon took a few steps forward. "I'm looking for my sister," he said.
"River?"
"You know her?"
There was a pause. "You better come inside."

So, River served Kerrigan, who was no longer human. Simon hadn't paid full attention to the different factions of this universe that River had become a part of when Raynor told him what had happened, but it didn't seem important. "How can I find her?"
Raynor didn't answer right away. "I'd have to take you to Char." Because this guy wouldn't last long on his own. "But-- listen. The chances of getting her back... I've tried." He wasn't planning on taking Simon any further than the door. Hopefully that'd be enough to scare him off.
