"The calm before the storm, you mean?" Marie asked, settling down with some food Kenzaki handed her. She'd just finished with her chores and was admittedly hungry.
She'd settled into her new home, finding new ways to make sure her tiny library kept dry. About half to a quarter of her collection was lent out to various people, which she didn't mind at all. The lean-to was her own, and somewhere out beyond the island was a world full of people.
In the meantime, Hurley was pleasant company, a nice guy that she hadn't regretted meeting. She had yet to tell him she was pyrokinetic - didn't want to alarm him - but she'd told him a lot about her life Before.

They had escaped the island. At last. They were in the Metropolis airport, surrounded by government spooks. Grim faced men in dark suits with sunglasses and coiled wire running from earpieces into the backs of their collars. A couple of them emphasized their gestures with handguns. Chloe objected but they paid no attention.
The whole group was being hustled through security--and straight toward unmarked black vans. Attempts to get past the spooks, to see or speak to or touch family and friends were repeatedly rebuffed. Daniel and Blaise tried to intervene and were both spun around, pushed against the nearest wall and handcuffed. Their protests went unheeded as they were stuffed into the back of a big limo and driven off.
Chloe thought she heard someone call her name. She looked around frantically, unable to see past the sudden crush of fellow survivors. Hurley, Scott, Locke, Adam--they surrounded her, towered over her, blocking her line of sight. She called out, "Clark?"
"Chloe?" It was Clark! Voices rose in sudden alarm--and

It was Clark, wearing the same near-uniform he always wore. Jeans, a red shirt and a blue jacket. He was as gorgeous as ever. Even after all the months on the island among all those other gorgeous men, Clark stood out. He was beautiful and sexy and perfect--and he looked at her like she was a ghost.
"Chloe? Is it really you? They said...." Clark swallowed hard, his eyes fixed on hers. "But it's been so long. We--I--had given up hope...." His voice failed him then, or maybe words failed him. All Chloe knew was that in an instant he'd snatched her off her feet and was hugging her close. Not with all his strength, god knows--but forcefully enough that she was left with no doubt about how badly he'd missed her.
Chloe returned the embrace with equal passion. She did use all of her strength. She shuddered with the sudden impulse to bawl, feeling like her heart would burst. They both babbled, long-buried emotions spilling out at last. It had taken months of grieving for Clark to accept the truth but now he knew he loved her the way she'd

Daniel was halfway to a defensive position, the P-90 brought up to a ready position and his fingers on the safety before he registered that the scream was both localized and not related to any threat creeping in from the outer corners of the beach. His attention, like everyone else's, riveted to and centered on Chloe, the source of the fear filled shriek

Chloe reached up and clutched Daniel's hand, where it was stroking her hair. "No," she said, hoping she didn't sound as desperate as she felt. His touch was a comfort. "No, I don't want to be alone."
She rolled over to face Daniel, resting a hand on his knee. They didn't speak at first. Chloe just accepted the comfort of his presence. She didn't stop crying immediately, but the tears slowed and then stopped. Chloe sniffled a little, then sat up and turned 'round again to pull a handkerchief from the small bag at her side.
After drying her eyes and blowing her nose, Chloe looked at Daniel again. She felt a little embarrassed now by her behavior, and wasn't sure what to say. What she finally did was ask, "How'd you know it was a nightmare?"
Daniel smiled in faint amusement. " You sat up and screamed, then started crying. It wasn't a big leap." Chloe glanced away, feeling her face warm. It was a dumb question, wasn't it

Experience was a bitch of a teacher. It never occurred to Daniel to question or challenge Chloe's assertion, and that alone told him just how spectacularly weird and unsettling his life was, both pre- and post-island. Chloe's island-assisted transformation was not a secret. She wasn't the same woman who first crashed on the island, not that any of them hadn't been changed by their experiences here. But Chloe had been attacked by the Wraith, left in an aged shell and then somehow, rejuvenated. Daniel's mind could jump to a million theories and suppositions, all of them possibly wrong, but every single one of them hinging on that haunting color of her eyes

Marie watched as Daniel comforted Chloe, contemplating the camp dynamics. A lot of people had paired up, which was so natural in human relationships. She'd held off, because her last crush had been on a teenager, and she was too principled to go for someone half her age. Even if her friends had pointed out to her that in their world, that taboo was probably way outdated and interfered with the continuation of humanity

As Methos approached the cook fire he noticed Marie was wiping at her eyes. He asked cheerfully, "The food spicy this morning, or there a joke I've missed?"
He'd already had some of the food so he doubted it had brought Marie to tears. It was possible it was a joke, and either he'd just missed the teller or she'd heard it a while ago but was only getting it now. Methos wasn't certain of that. He sat down with what was left of his breakfast, "Your books dry?"
"Eh. Suddenly homesick, that's all," Marie said. "It's weird, having so many people around really." She would not think of her world, of her Ami, of Alexei and Llaeseaf. Of Alexei particularly, who had forced her to train and use her gift. "Kind of silly to be homesick for a world that's empty, eh?"
Methos shook his head, "I don't think it's silly. Some people in a world of over 6 billion people think an empty world would be a paradise. They tend to be people who are either self-sufficient, or ones who have no idea how much work it takes to be self-sufficient. Some people though have been to one corner of the world or another that isn't crowded, and seen both the work required and the beauty to be seen."
He gave her a sympathetic look, "I don't mind the number of people here, but if it's any consolation I do find the... variety... odd."
