The last time Paul had been this nervous was when George Fox's xenophobes were closing in on him and Jenny in San Diego. After being forced to abandon their car, they'd been on foot in an area with no public transportation and few taxis. Any of the pedestrians could be one of Fox's goons

Not hard to identify the three, really. General Jack O'Neill was resplendent in his Air Force uniform, the rank and insignia of position quite clear on the epaulets. He sported a pair of dark sunglasses as proof against the sun, and, well.. it was just cool. He was no fool, knowing the psychological benefits to hiding one's eyes. Keep the other person a little off-balance, and whatever lies, planned or on the spur of the moment were easier to tell

Paul's stomach lurched when Carter indicated the SUV. The suggestion made sense, he reminded himself, as well as the fact that Kevin trusted General Damon who trusted General O'Neill. Still, Paul exchanged a glance with Kevin, who nodded. "By all means," Paul agreed.
They covered the short distance to the van in silence. Kevin and Paul walked side by side, as did O'Neill and Carter. The latter two lead the way. Mr. Teal'c followed behind. Paul didn't care for the rear guard, but didn't protest. He hadn't sensed any malice or fear from the soldiers, and attacking or capturing him and Kevin wouldn't help them get their men back.
By the time they got to the SUV Kevin looked twice as nervous as Paul felt. Carter opened the back passenger door, motioning them inside. "Gentlemen."
Although Paul didn't detect any duplicity, he palmed his sphere just in case. Then he laid his other hand on Kevin's shoulder, letting some of his relative calm flow into the young man. /Go on. I'm right behind you./

The walk to the vehicle was, indeed, a relatively quiet one. Every few steps, the two officers exchanged glances, and it seemed as if an entire conversation had taken place in the distance crossed, Teal'C impassively taking up the rear. There was a reason for him there, honestly. It was to be sure the other men were safe... after all, if Carter was right, they needed the pair's help

/Keep it together, Kev, don't freak out,/ is what Megabyte would have told him had Megabyte been there. Unfortunately, Megabyte wasn't there. Megabyte, like Ami was trapped on some freakish god-forsaken desert island and that was the entire reason that Kevin and Paul were meeting with the military

O'Neill's flurry of emotion made Paul blink. It was a complicated knot of grief, regret, love, and sorrow, some of which felt familiar. That familiarity and Paul's insatiable curiosity got the better of him. "You're a father, General O'Neill?"

Sam looked at it, waiting, essentially, for the 'go ahead'. Only polite, after all. Given her 'd'ruthers, she'd lock herself away and study the co-locator until she'd discovered all the little mysteries that lay within it's silvery shell, but she couldn't very well do that. And, there was the benefit of actually seeing it in action, which was worth hours of labour.
"He gave you carte blanc to go to your happy place with it."
Looking up at Jack, the scientist actually grinned at that, knowing exactly what it was that he'd meant as opposed to how it came out. She wouldn't be the one to tease him on it, but the gleam in her blue eyes was a certain message that she, too, had gotten the double entendre

Paul liked Colonel Sam Carter. She possessed many of humans' best qualities in spades: curiosity, creativity, intelligence, and adaptability. He hoped that the Air Force would be true to its word. Paul and Carter could learn much from each other

Sam listened intently to the concepts in play for the co-locator, and she nodded slowly, a flickering glance given to the general before she returns her attention to Paul. "Even if I understood how it worked, there wouldn't be anyone that I know of, outside present company of course, that would begin to be able to use it. It'd take a genetic coding that is just not present in a segment of population; and while genetic engineering can do many things, I'm thinking that it'd be a dead end." No sour grapes there, actually. The scientist is merely pointing out that there'd really be no chance, even if she'd learned all about the application... for the benefit of both of the men
