Midsummer Night's Dream
The hot air washed over Ginny in sticky, heavy gusts from her window. Also coming from her window were small pieces of gravel that bounced around her that she was steadfastly ignoring. If Harry Potter wanted to talk to her, he could wait until morning like a sane person. She was not going to sit up and find out what was so desperate that he felt he needed to throw rocks at her.
“Ginny!” Harry hissed, not for the first time that evening.
Ginny set her face and threw a piece of gravel back at him.
“I know you are awake! You’re throwing gravel at me.”
She threw another piece.
“Ginny. Listen, just come down here for a second.” He whispered, dodging another piece of gravel.
Giving an angry grunt, Ginny sat up and glared down at Harry.
“You had many chances today to talk to me. Why do you insist on waking me up in the middle of the night?”
“JUST. COME. DOWN. HERE.” Harry half whispered, obviously losing patience.
Rolling her eyes, Ginny tossed a handful of gravel down at Harry and pulled on her robe.
“Fine.”

She met Harry at the burrow’s back door, shutting it quietly so as not to wake the rest of her family. It was even hotter outside, if that was possible. The heat pressed against Ginny’s skin like sweaty palms. Harry gestured for her to follow him, and led her to a small copse of trees a short walk from the house.
She turned to him and arched her eyebrows.
“Now tell me what is so important.”
Harry looked down, and shifted awkwardly. Then he swiftly pushed her up against a tree and kissed her, his nose jabbing her in the cheek bone. Startled, Ginny let the kiss continue for a moment before reaching her hand back and slapping him. Harry staggered back, rubbing his cheek.
“Ow. Jeez, Ginny. What’d you do that for?”
Ginny leaned up against the tree and crossed her arms.
“Well, for starters, you woke me up in the middle of the night, you threw gravel at my open window hitting me with countless rocks, you took me outside in this godforsaken heat, and then just kissed me like I am supposed to swoon or something.”
Harry rubbed the back of his neck, and kicked at a rock sending it rolling a few yards away.
“Well, you didn’t have to slap me.” He muttered.
Ginny rolled her eyes and sighed.
“Harry, why are you trying to kiss me now? What is so special about tonight?”
“I don’t know, I guess I just…sort of…got the urge to?”
Ginny almost slapped him again.
“You idiot. Do you know how many years I sat in that room and wished you would kiss me? How I schemed and planned and tried to think up ways to trick you into falling for me? It took me a long time to come to terms with the fact that I was never going to kiss you.” At this, Harry interrupted Ginny.
“Well if you were so keen to have me kiss you, why’d you slap me?”
“Because I faced the real world and chose to stop pining away for you. And now on a whim you decide to kiss me? Not only that, but you have the gall to tell me it was just an urge.“ Ginny pushed herself up from her leaning position and began to walk back to the Burrow. Harry followed her, keeping about a foot behind her.
“Ginny, wait. That kiss was supposed to mean something. I want to…have…well, you know…”
“Sex?”
Harry’s blood rushed to his face, and he stumbled a bit almost losing his glasses.
“No! No, not sex. I mean, not that I wouldn’t want to do-I mean you’re very- Anyway, I just meant that maybe we could have some kind of…relationship?”
“No.”
“No? What do you mean ‘no’?” Harry caught up to her, and grabbed her arm, swinging her around to face him.
“Because, Harry. I’m over you. I don’t want a relationship with you other than a friendship. I’m sorry.” Ginny turned away, and started walking again.
“What would it take to make you want a relationship with me?” Harry called after her, forgetting to be quiet.
“I don’t know Harry. But being as stubborn as you are, I’m sure you’ll think of something to try.”

The next morning, Ginny rolled out of bed, trying to untangle herself from the blankets wrapped around her legs like ropes. A loud knock came from her door, just as she half stepped and half fell out of bed.
“Ginny? Hey, mum wants you to get up and come downstairs, its time for breakfast.” Ron called through the door.
Ginny yelled a garbled response, and began to dress. What she really wanted to do was wear her swimsuit. It was morning, but already very hot. Ginny settled on shorts and a tee shirt, and jammed her feet into some old sneakers.
Ginny sauntered into the dining room running her hands through her matted hair, and stopped short. There was the whole Weasley family sitting silent around the table looking up at Harry who was sitting on top of the table.
“Oh good, you’re here. I can start.” Harry smiled down at Ginny and proceeded to stand up. The blood drained from Ginny’s face.
“Friends, Ginny, I am here today to make an announcement-“
“Harry Potter, Don’t you say another word!” Ginny said, cutting him off. She grabbed his arm and roughly pulled him off the table.
“ MY ANNOUNCEMENT IS THAT I LOVE GINN-“ He was cut off again, this time by Ginny clamping a firm hand over his mouth and stepping on his foot.
“Hey, Mum? I have to go talk to Harry for a mo’ in the garden. I’ll be back shortly.” Ginny smiled at her mom and dragged Harry out the back door with her hand still in place over his mouth.
She pushed him up against the side of the house and leaned in very close.
“I don’t know what you think you are doing, but it is going to stop now.”
“So public declarations of love aren’t your thing, then?” Harry gave her a grin.
“No, Harry, YOU are not my thing.”
Harry shrugged her arms off his shoulders and began to walk back into the kitchen.
“I’ll get you yet.”
Ginny rolled her eyes.

Ginny sat lounging on an old beat up sofa in the living room, reading a book on how to redecorate using magic. It was the first time during the day that she had not felt Harry’s eyes on her, or had him hovering by her. Had she been this annoying when she had been infatuated with him? She hoped not, because this was torture. She was just beginning to relax, when she heard foot steps outside the sitting room. She stiffened to see whose head would appear in the doorway. To Ginny’s relief, it was Ron’s.
“Hey, Ginny.” Ron said, plunking himself down in an armchair a few feet away from her, resting his feet on an ottoman.
“Hey, Ron.” Ginny replied, reorienting her attention on her book.
“Harry is in your room.”
Ginny’s head snapped up.
“What is he doing my room?” Ginny cried, tossing her book aside.
“I don’t know. He said he was cleaning or something.” Ron picked up a magazine with a broomstick on it.
“The Hell he is!” Ginny leapt up and ran to her room. When she got to the door of her room, she slowed down and approached quietly. Through the open door , she saw Harry making her bed, and that her room was remarkably cleaner.
She leaned up against the door jam and said, “And what do you think you are doing in here?”
Harry looked up and smiled.
“What does it look like?”
“It looks like an invasion of my privacy.” Ginny entered the room and pulled her blankets out of Harry’s hands. “Go outside or something. You’re driving me crazy.”
“Crazy enough to date me?”
“I’ll never be that crazy, Harry.” Ginny began to remake her bed, hoping that he hadn’t discovered her diary which was hidden somewhere under her lumpy mattress.
***
Ginny brushed her teeth, and looked at herself in the mirror. She wasn’t happy with what she saw. The heat had pressed down her hair, and there was a fine sheen of sweat on her skin, and there were dark circles under her eyes from not getting enough sleep the night before. And that of course was Harry’s fault. In fact, all of her current exhaustion was due to him.
After getting ready for bed, Ginny rapped on her brother’s door on the way to her bedroom.
“Goodnight, Ron. ‘Night Harry- Do not throw rocks at my window tonight!” She could hear Harry start to get up from his bed, and she hurried to her own room, shutting the door.
As she sank down into her mattress, a large white owl settled on her windowsill, cooing softly. Ginny groaned and rolled away from it and the leg it had extended with a piece of parchment tied to it.
“Hedwig, I don’t want it. Give it back to Harry.” She buried her face in her pillow.
But Hedwig didn’t fly off back to Harry’s room, she instead hopped onto the bed. Ginny sat up in frustration and took the note off of Hedwig’s leg.
Ginny,
I promise not to bother you anymore if you just meet me at that little copse of trees where we went last night. I’ll be waiting at eleven.
-Harry
Ginny looked at her wristwatch and saw that it was ten thirty. She bit her lip and screwed up her eyes, trying to make a decision. She sighed. If she didn’t go, he’d probably be at her window later with a handful of gravel.
Ginny sat up and slipped her flip flops on, and didn’t bother with her robe. She carefully crept down the stairs, and out into the moonlit yard. A little ways ahead of her, she saw Harry’s figure, looking away from her.
“Harry,” she whispered.
He spun around and smiled.
“Hey Ginny.”
Ginny folded her arms across her chest, and blew the heavy hair out of her face.
“Listen. I’m not trying to take advantage of you,” at this Ginny snorted. “And I don’t want to just have sex with you. I really just want to have a relationship with you. Would you please just consider going on a date with me?”
Ginny was wavering. He looked so pathetic and pitiable standing there pleading with her for a date. She lowered her arms, and bit her lip.
“Alright, alright. ONE date. Will you promise to stop harassing me?”
Harry smiled. “Of course I’ll stop harassing you. When shall we go out? Tomorrow?”
Ginny wanted to reach out into the air and pull her words back in, to shove them back into her mouth where they should have stayed.
“Yeah, okay. Tomorrow night.”
Harry looked pleased, and took her hand. Ginny fought the urge to slap him, and let him hold her hand.
