And she takes another step
slowly she opens the door

Chris slowly opened the bedroom door to find Lance sound asleep in the bed. He was lying there as if he was just slung on the bed, half drunk and delusional. Well he was, half drunk and delusional that is. Chris couldn’t deal with him right now if he had been awake, it was just too much. Too much…

Check that he is sleeping
pick up all the broken glass

He shut the door just as quietly, and began to pick up the broken glass that was scattered across the kitchen. This was the first time Lance had broken something, two plates and a few glasses. It scared Chris, but he let on as if it hadn’t.

And furniture on the floor
been up half the night screaming

He had to straighten up the furniture also. Lance had knocked over the side table by falling on it- and had tried to throw the recliner across the room, but only succeeded in knocking it down.

Chris went to the kids’ room. He loved those kids so much, sometimes he thought he loved them more than Lance, maybe he did. Lily was two. Lance had gotten her dropped on his doorstep when she was one, after some random girl said she didn’t want to mess with her anymore. Lance had a few random swings with girls which resulted in babies.

That’s where Adam came from too. He is only eleven months. Very good little baby, never gives Chris a single problem. This one came from a prostitute that Lance had slept with who had claimed she was on birth control, but ended up getting pregnant. She threatened to tell the press that Lance had hired a prostitute if he didn’t take the boy, so he did. Well, actually Chris did.

Chris loved those kids so much, and he thought just that as he packed a few of their things and put them in the back of the car. He put Adam’s car seat in and fastened it securely. He packed a small bag of things for himself and then went back inside to get them.

Now it's time to get away
pack up the kids in the car

He got Lily in one arm, Adam in the other and trudged them out to the car. He made sure that each was belted in correctly and got into the driver’s seat. He looked in the rear view mirror to see the house that was home for the four of them. He put the key in the ignition, started the car, put it in drive and drove out of the driveway in silence.

Lance had gotten him on the neck this time; Chris could see the bruise forming already. Usually, Lance went for the legs or stomach, places easily covered by clothing. He was a little too drunk this time, and he missed and got his neck and face.

Another bruise to try and hide
another alibi to write

Chris wondered what he would tell the guys at work. JC, Justin, and Joey were already suspecting something. They were ready to kick Lance’s ass and get Chris and the kids away from him, but Chris didn’t want that.

Lance held the most respectable job in the family, brought home most the money and Chris couldn’t make it without him. He didn’t want to either.

But there are groceries to buy
and she knows she'll have to go home

Chris was scared for the kids sometimes. He glanced in his mirror to see a very drowsy Lily, and an Adam already sleeping peacefully with his thumb in his mouth. They were too innocent and beautiful to be hurt.

And there are children to think of
baby's asleep in the back seat

Chris drove silently in the night, rain running down all the windows now, and lightning high over head. He thought about everything. It was always the same. Leave in the middle of the night when Lance goes to sleep, only to stay in a crappy hotel because Chris couldn’t afford any better.

And another cheap hotel
two beds and a coffee machine

He’d lay the kids on one of the two beds, and wait till both was asleep, then he would lay down on the other bed and think so hard that his head hurt and finally sleep overcame him. He’d wake up in the morning and make some coffee, and then head back home to a sobered Lance.

It was always the same.

Another ditch in the road
you keep moving

Chris looked at the rain like it was a beautiful miracle. He loved it when it rained because it was peaceful and rhythmic. He liked it because it gave him hope.

Another stop sign
you keep moving on

That maybe one day, this would all be over.

Another lonely highway
in the black of night

That one day it would all stay and he could go on as a normal person.

There’s hope in the darkness
you know you’re gonna make it

If he kept leaving and coming back and watching the rain as he drove along the deserted highway in the dark hours of early morning, maybe one day it will all stop.

And the years go by so fast
silent fortress built to last

Just maybe.

Wonder how I ever made it through
