"You're watching soccer?" Bobby asks John, gesturing to the TV with his free hand.
"Yeah," John leans back on the couch and increases the volume. "Australia made it to the Finals. This is like, our second time in 32 years."
"Australia? You traitor. Aren't you supposed to be American now?" Bobby teases him and John tenses imperceptibly, his eyes sliding sideways to glance at Bobby. But there is no malice there, only a good-natured grin and John relaxes.
"Well, I guess I can support 2 teams. USA made it to the World Cup too," he replies.
"I didn't think you'd be into team sports," Bobby comments and he finally comes around to sit next to John. He stretches out his legs to rest them on the coffee table in the small, cramped apartment that they share now. John can't help but notice how Bobby's legs are just slightly longer than his now and how more self-assured he is.
"Team sports are OK," John shrugs. "If they have the right players."
"The right players?" Bobby asks him and he looks straight into John's eyes. A long silence passes between them and John fidgets slightly in his place, unsure as to what to say. But Bobby is the first to break contact, coughing self-consciously.
"So tell me more about soccer," Bobby asks as he peels open the tab on his soda.
"Huh?"
"What the hell is the offside rule anyway?" Bobby continues, wiping the foam off his lips with the back of his hand and John instantly regrets not having done the job for Bobby. Only he'd use his tongue instead.
"I thought you liked baseball."
Bobby shrugs elegantly. "I figure I could pick up a new sport. Besides, don't you want me to watch it with you?"
John stares at Bobby's clear blue eyes. There is no guile, no anger, no reproach there, only blazing honesty and he finds that his throat is now suddenly dry. "Yeah. It'd be cool if we watched the matches together."
Bobby smiles at John and wiggles lower on the couch so that his head is resting on John's shoulder. "Besides, I should support USA. We'd probably kick your ass."
John laughs and smacks Bobby, who smothers a chortle against John's shirt. "Idiot. They aren't even in the same group."
