Mimi spent the night singing with the Socceroo fans, though she confessed to Sora over her mug of dark beer that Australian English escaped her.  But Sora knew the game, and she could make herself understood when she started an argument with a Sydneysider over a penalty.

"Hey, stop it!"  Mimi got in the guy's face, speaking book-correct English.  "That's my friend!"

Later they stumbled across the Kammgarn's open court, jazz spilling out of the few clubs that weren't showing the game.

"Why didn't you tell me it was the wrong team?"  Mimi wailed, and Sora just smiled.

Will was ready to run away and grade papers.  Stephen and James were bellowing about England's injuries.

Mary snorted.  James rounded on her.  "Why should you care, your precious Beckham's still playing."

"Shows what you know!  Robin told me Rooney's out till quarters."

James's face was pure horror.  "Not Roonaldo!"

They started on people's ears and Paraguay, and Will escaped.  Right into Bran Davies, standing on his front porch.  "Oof!"

"Running away, boyo?"

Will shrugged, gripping Bran's very real and solid shoulders.

An envelope appeared.  Will thought: tickets.  "How d'you feel about Köln, this time of year?"
