It always has seemed to me that the one redeeming characteristic of the Malfoys, as nasty as they can be, is that they truly love each other, and this story captures that love so well. It must be very hard for Lucius to tell Draco to play the winners' game, but he does do it -- and emphatically -- because he loves his son and doesn't want to see him destroyed.

There are lots of really effective lines, especially the ones that make the story rich by alluding to things behind the scenes -- he means it more than when he first showed Draco to his own father and said he was proud. He means it more even than that first stolen kiss with Narcissa when she was still too young for him and he was too eager for her. The sense of emotions held in check because they are unseemly really pervades the piece, which makes what Lucius tells Draco at the end -- be you -- really stand out ( ... )

Excellent! This is the way I see Lucius, proud, intelligent and a good father. Thank you.

I absolutely ADORED this. A perfect example of how I wished to see Lucius. My only complaint is that this is not longer. There are some lovely lines in this, too. I particularly loved the line about his expression being shuttered like an abandoned building. And the interplay at the end where Lucius asks Draco if this girl is beautiful rather than a pureblood really made the fic for me. I hate stagnant characters, and these are the changes I envision these characters going through, not the supposed rigidity I see Rowling giving them. Excellent work, babe ♥

*blushes*

I think that Lucius knows how to survivie, above all else - and we know he cares about his family. I can absolutely see how Draco would feel alienated from him as a child while craving his approval, so I wanted to do something which made Draco a man without having to reject his father. I'm so glad you liked it!

Please pardon the late reply, RL is hell.

Here via themostepotente's rec.

I'm falling so hard for this story. It has everything I look for in a portrait of the Malfoys: family pride, survival instincts and love for each other, and it also fits perfectly into canon.

The encounter between Lucius and Draco rings so true, I found myself reading and nodding with every new line. All the emotions, the things they said and the things they left unsaid (Oh, and the same between Lucius and Narcissa, too!), Lucius's new gesture and how he made Draco see reason. Every word felt true to me - you even captured Harry perfectly in those few lines. And yay for ending that story with a note of hope. Draco will adapt, he will find his new place and happiness, too.

I wish I could be more coherent to tell you more, but I'm still too full of emotion for that.

Thank you so much for this very human and true portrait of my favourite HP family.
