The Art of Scrap, Friday, Period 4

Jan 27, 2012 06:20

The class was meeting back in the classroom again this week, and Dean was leaning back against his desk, requisite coffee in hand, and more coffee off to the side in case the students wanted any.

It was kind of expected of him, now. And Dean would hate to disappoint.

Composition: Not the same as compost. )

Get coffee. Look at your handouts. Drink coffee. Ignore Dean. This is art class. It's not like it really counts anyhow, right?

Using the moddable odds and ends that were left on your desk, create an example using one of the tricks of composition that Dean mentioned in the lecture. Spirals, triangles, similar shapes, spacing, and the rule of thirds.

He'll probably just shake his head at you if you make a triangle out of three bottle-caps, mind.

Nathan went with the whole spiral thing for his composition. Using thumbtacks, thimbles and even batteries, he started making spirals within spirals and spirals coming off the original big spiral.

It looked a mess after he finished so he swept it all away to try and make it a little more eye catching.

Rapunzel actually decided to try triangles and a spiral. Kind of mixed together. If you squinted at it just right, it kind of almost looked like a sun.

In case you wanted to go back and revise the chicken wire, or put it together for the first time, before Dean gets you to move on with it next week.

Try to plan it out with composition, and the pieces of scrap you picked up last week, in mind.

After agonizing over it for two weeks, Rapunzel had finally decided what she wanted to do, so once she was done practicing with odds and ends, she sat down with the sketch she'd worked up and started slowly trying to get the chicken wire into the right shape.

It was hard! Apparently getting the lines and shapes of a human body down were a lot harder when you had to work in three dimensions than when you were just putting pencil on paper.

She had her tongue caught lightly between her teeth as she concentrated on what was supposed to be a slender arm...

Who makes things that are interesting by virtue of the fact that they move. And movement is a factor of composition too, but Dean doesn't teach animation, here.

Yeah, Claudia wasn't super good at the whole still life thing, just yet.

Which would explain why at least one of her paper clips ended up unfolded and turned into a button axle.
