It was another Friday, which meant another art class. Weren't you all so lucky? And today, Dean had brought in a bunch of balloons, glue, paper pulp, newsprint, paint...
And candy. Oodles of candy.
"Hey, all." Dean was wearing that lazy smile of his, again, as he leaned back against the desk with the coffee on it. Because, yes, he was still in the habit of giving his students coffee. You weren't art students unless you were buzzing on caffeine, after all. "Today, we're gonna take it pretty easy. I want to get you to show me what you did with the stuff you picked off the beach last week. Let's see where your creativity took all you cats over the course of the past seven days. And then we're going to do something a little different."
If today's project seemed a little arts-and-craftsy, Dean didn't show any signs of caring. But then, with candy involved, should he?
"We're going to be dabbling in paper mache this week," he informed the group. "You take bits of paper, and layer them onto an- and you should know this word by now- armature of some sort, to create a sculpture. It's a bit time consuming, mostly because this stuff can take a while to dry, so I'm giving you guys some options. You can choose to make your own paper mache piece from scratch. There are balloons, newspapers, tape, and chicken wire here if you want to create an armature for something ambitious of your own. You'll need to wait about a week for it to dry before you can paint it and finish it, though. Or you can just decorate one of these things, here."
He nodded to several of the balloons, which were already done up with a hardened shell of dried paper around them, just waiting to be popped.
"You can make piñatas out of those, or whatever you want if inspiration hits you. This stuff is kind of like the recycled, messier little cousin of the heavy duty, welded scrap pieces that I prefer to do, so if you have any questions, don't hesitate to bug me, guys."
Really, Dean just wanted an excuse to make piñatas. That it happened to involve recycling newsprint and therefore made this lesson somewhat topical was just a bonus.
