Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

May 04, 2012 23:36

When the planning for the new semester had started, no one had really noticed that the welcome picnic would coincide with Cinco de Mayo. When the food arrived and all of it, including the desserts, had somehow ended up as a variety of Mexican food, well, it was a little too late to change anything ( Read more... )

Darcy had no idea how much help she was going to be, but she was walking around with her name tag on and looking for a Dorothy.

A Dorothy was unhelpfully walking around with a name tag that had the Dorothy bit furiously scribbled out, and ACE inked above it in big black block letters. The last name was the same, though: McShane.

She was also walking around in a bit of a daze, glancing down at that name tag every so often. Ace had thought to scam some free food at this party before seeing if she could scout out a job downtown; she wasn't expecting to see her own name -- however WRONG WRONG WRONG they'd got it, on one of the badges at the student table.

They'd handed her a card with someone else's name on it as well, so in between looking suspiciously at her own tag, Ace was scouting about for anyone called... "You Darcy, then?"

"Usually." Darvy agreed. "Are you also know as Dorothy an new at this school?"

Ace was good at sulky faces; not so good at keeping them on for more than a few seconds, though, around kids her own age. "Yeah, but don't spread that about, will you? I mean, who goes by a naff name like Dorothy when they're not in playschool anymore?"

"Someone who shares her parent's bad sense of humor?" Darcy tried. "Or is from a different decade or something." She figured she should check. "What's the date today?"

"May 5th, 2012," Ace volleyed back. Thanks for that, Victor. "Picked that one up in the bus station. I am from a different decade, though. Nineteen eighty-seven, give or take a few months on a space colony in the future."

Oh Ace. You have just cemented in Darcy's mind that aliens were behind all the weirdness at Fandom. "Were there aliens?" Darcy checked. "That mean you've heard about the weird that happens around here too?"

"Nothing but aliens; just not many interesting ones." Sad how you can lose your ability to be impressed by extra arms when they still use 'em to leave you the local equivalent of two-cent tips. "The sort with at least one brain never stuck around long on Iceworld." Ace took another look around the lawn before shaking her head at Darcy. "What's weird about here? Besides the bloke in the full-body red lycra; I'll give you that one."

Darcy blinked a few times. "Aliens can be boring? Only one I met looked like a crazy homeless person. Hot, but crazy." She amended. "So uh, stuff happens? Just never to me!" There may have been a pout there. "I mean, people think they're other people, the classes are all bizarre, and the school board made us wear itchy uniforms and act normal."

Ace snickered. "That last bit's not weird. Stupid, but not weird. All the schools I ever went to had itchy uniforms and wanted me to act normal. 'Til they kicked me out."

"Ew." Darcy made a face. "I just stuck to public schools before this, thanks. Oh, the kitchens in common rooms are always stocked with food. So there's always pop-tarts!" She had her priorities straight, okay?

Ace brushed aside a moment's confusion about public schools and why they wouldn't have uniforms as Yanks are weird and moved on to the important bit, because hello, she had her priorities straight too. "You had me at food, but what's a pop tart?"

The shores of Old Blighty were so deprived before the early nineties.

"OMG." Darcy said out loud. "You poor deprived soul. It's like the ultimate food. Dough with jam in it. And covered in frosting. It's sugar with more sugar and omg they don't have cell phones when you're from yet. Or the Internet. Or like...not awful hair "

"Oi!" To be fair, Ace's hair, which she reflexively smoothed down, was a mess thanks to travel-via-kaBOOM. It was relatively free of Giant Eighties Hair Syndrome, though, by virtue of being pulled back from her face.

It's hard to maintain your affront when you have to immediately follow it up with a curious, "What's an internet?" though.

"Mullets." Darcy informed her. "There were mullets." She took a deep breath and tried to summarize the Internet. "Tge Internetvis like, well everything. All the information, all the people, all the cats you could ever want. We need to get you on a computer first. Those shrunk." She was thinking of 50s style computers.

"Oh, a planetary communications network!" 1987 by way of outer space. "Sweet; Earth's got one of those now?"

Though... "And you can send cats on it? How's that work? One of those portal things?"
