Basically: Hussie claims he wrote the eight human characters to be raceless, such that the audience could project any race they wanted on them. A bunch of people said that he did a very poor job of that, and that there are multiple points in the story where it's strongly implied that they are white. Hussie responded that to claim that white is the only race the characters could possibly be is itself racist. This pissed a lot of people off. He semi-backed down later in the day, acknowledging that he had screwed up a few times in writing the characters racelessly, and going back and changing the most egregious example, but not really backing down from "saying these characters could only be white is racist", further pissing people off.

Someone made the argument that all of the kids in the story - due to their last names, a (ETA: early 1900's in a wealthy white American household) Southern upbringing in two, blond hair in the other two, and a mention of one of their direct relatives being white - are coded as white, even if it's not mentioned specifically.

Several people - who were then later backed by the creator of the work - called them out as being the true racists since the characters are supposedly able to be of any race (i.e. a blank slate). Which isn't what the original person (and several people after that) were talking about.

Yes, the characters potentially could be any race, but surrounding details in the text - at the best - cast doubt on the feasibility of them being so, and - at the worst - paint "white" as default while giving a vague last-minute nod to PoC for liberalism's sake.

I don't think they are supposed to necessarily be blond actually. I think their hair is might literally be white. We know the lot of them have weird eyes.

If we give them colors though, I always figured dave's hair was actually just albino crow feathers. :P

The posts in the secret are...pretty privileged, honestly. Just from reading them, I think he probably really does mean well, but that he hasn't had that moment of clarity that white people who genuinely don't want to be racist (or guys who don't want to be sexist etc.) have to have before they can really get it.

Actually, I amend this comment slightly, because I actually found a good picture when looking for the worst examples of ghettostuck to troll with, so have that instead.

I agree with this. One of the characters can be easily interpreted as albino, which affects all races, last names can be explained by intermarriage or *gasp* the very common choice of changing a last name to appear more white, which is really, really common in the US. I think Hussy tried to create a blank slate, but people jumped on him because they wanted to assume he was racist. The characters are literally- literally- white. As in the color white. The blending of all colors. Stop trying to create this idea that because you want to target the guy as racist, it automatically makes him racist.

White is the reflecting/absense of all colors. Black (or more like a muddled brown depending on whether you use subtractive or additive color) is the blending of all colors.

Depends, do you mean in lights or in paint/inks/etc.?

In light, white is the blending of all the colors. In paints/ink/etc., white is the absence of color.

/random fact is random.

But, serious question, which one do you mean? :D
