Lex was blissfully unaware of his father's presence upthread on the island, and was really just at the picnic for people watching purposes.

And the free food, few teenage boys could resist the lure of free food, no matter how rich their not-so-absent fathers were.

Lionel on the other hand had specifically been looking out for Lex, and his son was far from inconspicuous.

Moving with remarkable silence, he came up from behind Lex and draped an arm over his shoulder. "Hello, Lex." His grin would have seemed completely affable to anyone who didn't know him.

Affable as a shark who'd just scented blood in the water. Lex stiffened as a chill ran up his spine. "Dad," he managed.

At least it had been a nice month.

"Smile, Lex," Lionel ordered sotto voce, tightening his grip on Lex's shoulder even as his smile broadened. "Anyone would think you weren't happy to see me."

Lex's mouth twisted into a rictus grin, wishing he'd worn a thicker jacket as Lionel's thumb dug into the flesh of his shoulder. "Just surprised you accepted the invitation," he lied for the benefit of anyone observing this twisted little pantomime.

"Not as surprised as I was to receive it." His tone was jovial, and the hand on Lex's shoulder slid up to rest against his the back of his neck, not quite threatening, not yet. Lionel's voice lowered once again. "Since last time I checked you were enrolled at an entirely different school."

It was probably the adrenaline that made a bad idea seem like a good one, but Lex couldn't stop himself from saying "Odd, since your signature's on all the exit forms."

Lionel laughed, and if Lex still had hair he would have found Lionel's hand gripping it, as it was his voice lowered dangerously, belying the laughter.

"It was clever, sending them from my office, but having a different return address." If Lex had used the tactic against anyone else, there would even have been pride in his voice. "It probably would have worked even longer if some fool at the post office hadn't made a mistake and put the invitation in with my mail simply because my name was on it. Now, Lex, give me one good reason why I shouldn't drag you back to Metropolis right now."

"Because that would cause a scene," Lex replied automatically, his voice just as low, if far less dangerous, than Lionel's. "And you don't own anyone here to cover it up."

Definitely the adrenaline speaking.

"This school is good for your spine, at least," Lionel said, giving Lex an almost affectionate shake before letting him go. "But you'll need more than that if you want this adolescent rebellion to continue past Monday." No matter he'd only been on the island a few hours, he'd be able to buy someone if he needed to before then.

Lex didn't rub his neck, or try to put more distance between them, no matter how much he wanted to, and he desperately tried to ignore the warm glow at even a back-handed compliment from Lionel.

"I'm sure I can think of something," he said, mind whirring frantically. If he actually thought it would work, he'd get down on his knees and beg not to go back to Excelsior.
