Jim's previous night had been excellent, thank you. And now he was getting treated to free food and drinks? Most excellent even if he still felt like he hadn't completely worked out all the itchiness.

Still, he was out there, enjoying the sun after having been so cold in class earlier.

"Better than what?" Jim asked, averting his eyes to look anywhere but at Pike. "I'm going to school. Getting a great education!"

Just don't ask him about his classes, Pike. Though, he probably already knew.

He already knew about your classes, Jim. And he was going to meet all your teachers.

Chris gave him a look that very clearly said 'try another one'.

Jim had known this guy for all of five minutes but with the way he was being looked at, it felt like five years.

"What?" he asked, playing dumb. "I'm not doing anything!"

Because this was the type of person that you attracted. The kind of will put up with absolutely none of your bullshit.

It'll keep you humble and alive someday.

"I already heard what passes for the news here."

"Yeah?" Jim crossed his arms because he felt like he should be defensive or something. This guy, man. "Anything interesting going on in the news?"

Chris crossed his arms right back. Feel the force of his judgement on you life choices. You should be studying!

"Would you quit that?" Jim complained. It wasn't often he felt off balance. He was the usually the one causing others to be off balance. "You don't know me."

That was a great excuse, Jim. A great one.

"I know someone with your intelligence should be doing something better than being shipped off to high school." Oh snap!

"I am not my father," Jim told him, shaking his head. "I prefer using my intelligence for other things."

You were a jerk, Pike. A total jerk who had Jim on the defensive.

Which meant something had to be getting through that thick head, right? Oh god, please say right.

"Like what?"

He wasn't supposed to ask that question because Jim didn't have a readily available answer.

"Stuff." That was weak. He frowned. "What does it matter to you? You're not my father or my mother or even my idiot stepfather."

"No, I'm just the guy who came out here to make sure you're going to do something with your life when you graduate from here."

He totally had an inspiring speech prepared, Jim. Wanna hear it? Or did you want to get into a barfight first?

"What's it matter?" Jim asked, not sure if he was ready for an inspiring speech. It was still early and he'd done a lot of things last night. "You're acting like there's no one else signing up for Starfleet. Pretty sure you're not short on recruits."

God, Jim.

"Recruits? No," Chris admitted. "Leaders... always use more of them."

"Find someone else," Jim said stubbornly. "You got the wrong Kirk, man. The leader's dead."

Deny, deny, deny. Jim was just gonna deny everything with this guy right now. Maybe that'd depress him and make him go away.
