The portal opened where it always did, nestled in the center of the park. Its colors swirled into existence early in the morning, casting eery light onto the grass below.
It didn't remain eerie for long.
The first set of tiny feet came through at sunup.
Many more followed.

There was no sign of either of her parents on the other side, which was unusual, since she was used to portals transporting her between their respective worlds, but the place looked familiar. And she wasn't alone.
Perhaps one of the others would be up for doing something fun.

She skidded to a stop when she registered that she was not only no longer being pursued, but she wasn't remotely where she had been a second ago.

They'd ended up in the one place neither of them ever wanted to see again.
"Yeah. Fandom." Was the teen's tight reply as he looked up at the sky. "And it's not cold. Come on. Let's get to the dorms while there's sunlight and figure this out."
They ran as if their lives depended on it... because it once had.
