Samwise stood on the rocky outcropping, his expression grim. Emyn Muil. What a terrible place this was! But not the worst that lay ahead.

His gaze turned toward the horizon and the smudge of darkness that seemed to devour the last ribbons of blue sky in a hungry maw. Black clouds boiled around that misshapen form, their linings tinged a flickering red.

Mordor. The most fearsome place in the world. A land to be avoided and shunned at all costs. The last place any of the free peoples would want to go.

And exactly where they needed to be.

A gentle hand touched his shoulder and he turned to look in to the eyes of his beloved Master.

"Best not to dwell on it, Sam," said Frodo kindly. "Time enough for that when we're closer."

Sam nodded. "Right you are, Mister Frodo," he said. "There are plenty of things to be worrying about in the here and now without dwelling on the what-ifs."

"Well said, my dear Sam!" Frodo offered what he hoped was an encouraging smile. "And I think I've found a way down at last! This way . . ."

Settling his pack more comfortably on his broad shoulder, Sam let his Master lead the way, carefully picking a path across the rocky shale. He paused long enough to look back the way in which they'd come. Behind lay the Shire and home. Ahead lay Mordor and . . . what? Danger, certainly. And possibly things more terrible than his imagination could conjure.

"Sam?"

"Here!," he answered, and hurried to catch up.

No matter how his heart longed for Home, his place was on the road ahead by Frodo's side.
