Sam hadn't set out to listen to the voices. Nor was it his plan to try and understand what they were saying. His only intent had been to set his hand to a bit of much needed trimming of the grass border, there beneath the window, seeing as he was already in the garden. But the voices carried to him even over the sound of his shears, and Sam soon found himself curious at their tone. What could cause Frodo to sound so worried and Gandalf so gruff?
Before Sam himself realized it, he had stopped clipping altogether and was bent close to the sill to try and make out a word or two to help his understanding. The words suddenly stilled to silence. He looked up in puzzlement, wondering if he should try to get a bit closer, when a long fingered hand on an even longer arm clothed in gray shot from the opening and grasped him firm by the back of his collar.
Sam gave a cry of alarm as he was swiftly hauled up from the ground and in through the window, right into Bag End and the start of a Very Big and Terrible Adventure.
