He had been a fool! A young and over confidant fledgling fool! Cutting it so ghod damn close to sunrise after a night spent alone in the Pest that Kraven had barely managed to find and take haven from the rising daystar.
The young vampire found refuge under one of the many bridges that lined the Danube. He huddled down, as far as possible from the sunlight under the wooden overpass as he listened to the mortals all around him, heard their cars as they drove over him, every second filling him with fear. Fear of some human, or even worse, a group of humans who might find him, discover what he was then try and slay him by pulling then shoving him into the killing sunlight.
Kraven had to squeeze his eyes tight against the growing brightness before the overpowering sunlight burned out his retinas leaving him not only trapped but blinded. He wanted to shed his leather over coat because the heat was becoming unbearable but to do so would mean more blistering burns on his skin just as his hands and face had already suffered from.
The vampire wondered how much of his hair would be singed and broken off by night fall. Wondered if this thirst would keep growing, drying out his mouth and throat as the air heated up over and around him making breathing difficult. He was doing his best not to panic as it felt as if he were suffocating in the growing temperature, the vampire’s breath becoming more labored and enforced as he concentrated on drawing air in and expelling it again. He had to keep from falling asleep under the heavy demand of the day sleep, for to do so would certainly mean death.
He huddled miserably in the dirt, wondering if slipping in to the water would help ease his growing agony and never ending day mare but thought better of it. The flowing cold water would only sap his strength and could pull him from what little safety the shade was offering and expose him to the day.
“Someone please, help me.” he mumbled into the crook of his arm as he kept his head bowed and as much of his face covered as possible from the overwhelming and still building heat.
The fledgling gave a sob, he was never going to survive the heat as he cried out when the sunrays shifted, moving and crossing over his arm and leg. The vampire flung himself back as smoke rose from his burned skin, blisters instantly forming under his clothing as he tried shielding his eyes praying desperately for a miracle to save him, blood tears staining his eyes.
That’s when he heard it. Off in the distance and he gave another sob as the rumbling vibrations of thunder reached his ears. He smiled in tired relief, where there was thunder the drenching downpours where close behind! All he had to do was wait and count the never ending minutes before the life saving sounds of the rolling thunder where finally upon him and his hiding place. When the first sheets of rain came slamming down upon the bridge Kraven whooped with joy!
“Just wait a few more minutes for the storm to take hold!” he kept telling himself as he waited for the mortals to finish scattering before he stumbled out from under the bridge and made a staggering retreat to the mansion as he vowed never again to be so careless.
