Lisa ran her hands over her stomach. There was the barest hint of a swell, easily hidden with clothing. In a few weeks that would all change, but for now…
Only she and House knew. In the end she hadn’t even asked him- he’d asked her. Did she want him to be her donor? Would she mind? The kid won’t be into square dancing, but hey, that’s fine.
She let her shirt fall back over her stomach, straightening it out. Taking a quick glance in her mirror, she smiled at her reflection and picked up her hairbrush. She hadn’t thrown up yet- her mother used to say she never threw up with Lisa, but despite this she had been quite nauseous at times.
Running the brush through her hair, tugging some knots out with her fingers, she glanced at her stomach in the mirror. Getting onto the first month… Still a long way to go, she knew. House hadn’t said much after she told him after the implantation had been a success, though she did catch him taking a glance at her stomach when she passed him in the corridor. She didn’t expect him to become warm and hold her and lovingly stroke her stomach, and him not doing that was probably better. She did believe once the child was born that he would become involved- even if it was just attending events Derek, if it was a boy, or Charmaine, if it was a girl, became involved in at school.
Setting down her brush, Lisa pulled her work shirt over her head and started unbuckling her pants. Unclipping her bra, she ran a hand over her breast. They weren’t too sore yet, but soon… She never felt tenderness when she was menstruating, but that could change. Probably would, too.
Tossing her clothes into the wash basket, she stepped out of her panties and pulled out a fresh pair from her dresser.
She hadn’t told Stacy yet. She had seen her over the weekend over lunch, and although it played on her mind, Lisa couldn’t bring herself about to tell the woman that her ex-boyfriend was fathering her child. Stacy was her friend, even more then a friend. She was her confidante, her lover. If Stacy wasn’t with Mark, Lisa imagined she couldn’t even put ‘girlfriend’ on the list.
Pulling her nightgown over her head, she shuffled to her bed and switched her lamp on. Crossing to the light switch on the wall, she flicked it off and returned to her bed. Pulling back the covers, she slipped in, sighing softly as she felt the warmth of the hot water bottle at the end toast her feet. Pulling the blankets up over her shoulders, Lisa rested her hand on the other side of the bed. She’d already started to look at cots. Even though she knew the dangers of having a baby in an adult bed, she had long had a fantasy of when she was a mother, she’d wake up in the middle of the night and see her child asleep beside her.
Tracing her hand over the sheet, Lisa smiled to herself. She could tell Stacy she was pregnant- she had long ago admitted when Stacy was still working at the hospital that she was considering a sperm donation. Stacy had encouraged her, even said she’d help her choose a donor if she so wished. And while Lisa had only shrugged at the time, saying she was only toying with the idea, she didn’t know if she’d go through with it at the end…
Rolling onto her back, she switched the lamp off, watching as the room lapsed into darkness. She’d call Stacy tomorrow… ask her when she wanted to catch up next.
Tracing her hand over her stomach, Lisa smiled to herself and closed her eyes. She had always slept on her back… wouldn’t be able to do that again in a while. Breathing softly through her nose, brushing her hand over her stomach one more time, she settled back and let herself drift off to sleep.
