link Some days he wondered about leaving this place. Then he banished all thoughts away. Grace Brothers was more than a department store. It was more than his work. It was his what kept him happy each day. He formed friends, although half the time he didn’t admit it they where all his friends.
Every single member of the staff that he saw each day. Every of staff that he saw go through Grace brothers. Mr Grace, Mr Rumbold, Mr Grainger, Mr Tebbs, Mr Goldberg, Mr Humphries, Mr Lucas, Mr Spooner, Mrs Slocombe, Miss Brahms, Mr Mash and even Mr Harman he considered a friend.
He didn’t understand why Mr Lucas walked away from the building without a second look back. He didn’t understand why Mr Grainger had never said goodbye. Although they called him a pompous old man he wasn’t. Inside he was a softie and he wanted to be.
Whenever his wife wanted to talk about him retiring he always said, “maybe in a few more years” it was the easiest solution. Because he was going to be the last one to go and if he wasn’t, they where going to have to force him.
When he lay in bed that night he liked to relay the days events trying to hold back laughter as he recalled them. He always tried to figure out whether Mr Humphries was or wasn’t and then just decided normally that he’d figure it out ‘tomorrow’
Explaining things to his wife wasn’t all that easy either. If he had to stay behind due to a meeting or if he had to stay at the store she normally wasn’t very happy about that. He normally had to explain that it wasn’t his fault either.
As he thought these things over he smiled. He wouldn’t leave Grace Brothers for the world.
Title: Merry Christmas, Mr Humphries
Fandom: Are You Being Served?
Characters: Mr Humphries, Mr Lucas and other members of staff
Prompt: Christmas
Word Count: 573
Rating: PG
Summery: The Christmas party is always a blast
He watched as his friend drank more and more. It was extremely rear to see him let himself get drunk. There where only about three reasons he normally did. Which was a) Christmas b) New Year’s Eve or c) he was having trouble at home.
He ignored Shirley’s advances on him as he watched his friend get more and more… well… friendlier with the other staff members. He took a sip of his beer as he continued to watch.
It wasn’t as though he wasn’t having fun at the Christmas Party he was just concerned. He watched him as he tried to make an advance on Mrs Slocombe and tried to ignore the unpleasant feeling he got as his friend got stuck under the mistletoe with her.
He gulped as he watched him stumble over unsure as to what he was going to do.
“Mr Lucas you’re not with the lift girl?” he slurred, surprised.
“Don’t really feel like it tonight” Suddenly he looked slightly pale to him. He glanced at him, concerned.
“Mr Humphries are you alright?”
“I… don’t feel well” He managed to get out before stumbling. He instantly got up to help his friend and looked around for another staff member to try and help him.
Mrs Slocombe was now talking to Miss Brahms and Captain Peacock was ‘talking’ to one of the lift girls. He spotted Mr Goldberg talking to Young Mr Grace (who remarkably was still there) and then finally he spotted Mr Rumbold who seemed to be free for the moment.
“Mr Rumbold are you free?” Mr Lucas asked hesitantly as he watched Mr Rumbold shakily look backwards and forwards and then came over.
“Yes I’m free what is it Mr Lucas?”
“Well um… Mr Humphries isn’t feeling well and I thought it might be a good idea to get him home” Mr Rumbold took one look at Mr Humphries who was slumping next to him and nodded.
“Yes that would be a good idea Mr Lucas. Now why was it necessary to call me over”
“Well I was just wondering if it would be wise to send him off on his own, maybe someone should go with him” He said with a roll of his eyes that went unnoticed by Mr Rumbold.
“Yes well you should go with him Mr Lucas. I’m sorry you have to leave early” Mr Rumbold said and he nodded. He then noticed that Mr Humphries had nodded off. He sighed.
“Mr Rumbold could you call a taxi? I’ll wake up Mr Humphries” Mr Rumbold nodded and stumbled over to the phone. He then smiled as he realised how he was going to wake his friend up, “Mr Humphries are you free to go home?”
Unfortunately unlike Mr Grainger it didn’t work. Mr Humphries mumbled something and continued to sleep. Then he realised that he couldn’t let Mr Humphries’s mother see him like this and knew instantly that he had to come home with him.
“Mr Lucas your taxi is here” Captain Peacock told him.
“Thank you Captain Peacock, can you help me with Mr Humphries?”
Ten minutes later they arrived at his place and he slowly eased Mr Humphries into his bed. He decided that he could have the couch for the night. To help a friend. He almost laughed at how peaceful he looked but instead he quietly left the room with a small smile on his face.
“Merry Christmas, Mr Humphries”
