Summery: The Night after the Christmas Party Mr Humphries wakes up to something surprising.

The first thing he noticed as he woke up was that he wasn’t in his brightly coloured room. The second thing he noticed was the fact that he had a splitting headache. He could remember everything that happened the night before up until a certain point and then it all went blank and his headache kicked in.

He groaned slightly and tried to figure out what he could remember and whether or not he could figure out where he was and what he was doing there. He remembered the day at work alright and he also remembered the Christmas party afterwards. Well right up to about his fifth drink. He willed himself to look down and pray that he hadn’t done anything stupid.

Thankfully he was in pyjamas. But who’s he didn’t know. He didn’t recognize them as the pair that Mrs Slocombe had and he also didn’t recognize the bed that Mrs Slocombe had so he knew that (thankfully) it wasn’t hers.

He closed his eyes and pictured the last scene he could remember which was trying to teach Mrs Slocombe how to put her legs behind her head. Which had proven to be harder than he had thought it would be and that had caused him to have another drink.

He opened his eyes again and moved himself slowly out of the bed. He ruled out Captain Peacock because from what he could remember Captain Peacock had been entertaining himself with Mr Rumbold’s secretary. (A sight he never wanted to see again.)

He winced slightly as he looked out the window. There where only two others that it could be and if it was one of them… he didn’t want to think of the embarrassment. He paused slightly taking another look around the room.

”Blimy your awake” A voice said and he winced again.

“Mr Lucas, noise” Mr Lucas nodded understanding instantly two seconds passed and he looked at Mr Lucas, “Mr Lucas?”

“That’s the name. Don’t wear it out”

“We didn’t…” His face flushed red hoping that Mr Lucas would catch his drift. Thankfully he did almost instantly and went extremely pale as he shook his head.

“No we didn’t! After a drinking contest with Mrs Slocombe (boy you two can drink) you two ended up too drunk to go home by yourself and so Miss Brahms took Mrs Slocombe back to her place for the night and you came home with me. Next time however I would appreciate it if you DIDN’T try and put the moves on me in front of the lift girl”

“What?” His headache suddenly grew a lot bigger.

“Can you say that again?” He asked into the phone, now sitting down. It couldn’t be true. It wasn’t supposed to happen to him.

“Mr Grainger died in his sleep last night I’m sorry Mr Lucas” He noticed that Mr Humphries was being calm about this and he didn’t know how he could be.

“How the hell can you be so calm about this?” He voiced his thoughts, “he wasn’t supposed to die” he said softly and he noticed that he was shaking.

“I’ve had time to process this. Mr Rumbold told me the news this morning” Mr Humphries explained to him, “I’m sorry I left it so late to tell you but it took me until lunch time to figure out a way to tell the rest of the staff”

“I… still can’t believe it…” He said quietly his voice shaking a little bit, “do you know when the funeral is?”

“Not quite yet Mr Rumbold is finding out those details tomorrow, but…” He could hear his friend’s voice trail off and he wondered what he was thinking.

“But…” He prompted when it was obvious that he wasn’t going to finish the news.

“Well… Mr Rumbold, Captain Peacock, Mrs Slocombe, Miss Brahms, Mr Harman, Mr Spooner, Miss Bellfridge and myself are all going to the pub next door for a few drinks in Mr Grainger’s memory after work today… would you like to come as well?”

“Mr Spooner and Miss Bellfridge?” He echoed not entirely sure who they where.

“Oh that’s right you wouldn’t know them. Miss Bellfridge is Mr Rumbold’s… rather attractive secretary and Mr Spooner is well… my assistant on the menswear counter”

“But they wouldn’t know Mr Grainger would they? Wait attractive? You notice these things?” He asked curiously, his eyes widened a bit. There had been changes then.

“Well no… they don’t know Mr Grainger but it’s a staff thing and you know I’m neither one way or the other and a blind person would notice Miss Bellfridge”

“She’s that attractive?”

“Defiantly, a few more kisses from her and I would have made up my mind” He nearly fell off his bed.

“You’ve had kisses from her?”

“Not as many as Captain Peacock but yeah”

“You lucky devil you”

“Hey since you’ve been gone I’ve had a couple of kisses from Mrs Slocombe and Miss Brahms”

“Shirley? I didn’t get anywhere with her!” He was on the floor at that point.

“You just don’t have the magic touch. Anyway will you come to the pub tonight?” He could almost see his friend smirking on the other end of the phone.

“Yeah sure I’d like to meet this Mr Spooner and see you lot again but what have you got that I haven’t got?”

“It’s simple” His friend paused and he waited, “I’m neither one way or the other”

“WHAT?” He yelled into the phone, yes he was going to enjoy meeting his co-workers tonight- even if it was for such a sad occasion.

Summery: Mr Spooner thinks about Respect

He was the junior and the least respected out of the lot of them. Sometimes he wished he was higher up but sometimes he was happy where he was for the simple reason that he didn’t want to say goodbye to any of his friends that he had made in the store.

For he knew that the only reason he would ever be made senior would be if someone else left and Mr Humphries position became free and he didn’t want that. He just wanted to be more respected.

It was just that every time he managed to gain some respect he lost it almost as quickly. He wouldn’t mind seeing Captain Peacock as Middle management and Mr Humphries as floorwalker but then he knew he wouldn’t be promoted as Senior for another few years.

He sighed as he resorted the glove draw- something that Captain Peacock had ordered him to do. When he was going to get promoted he wasn’t going to treat the juniors like this he vowed to himself. He was going to treat them with the respect that he never got.

“Mr Spooner stop dilly-dallying and get back to work” Captain Peacock’s voice interrupted his thoughts and he sighed again.

“Yes Captain Peacock”

Summery: Captain Peacock says goodbye.

He wondered why this was happening to the store. He could remember his first day and this was his last and he wasn’t the one who had chosen to leave. The store was closing and he couldn’t do a thing about it. Everyone had tried to do something and finally they all just gave in.

This was his store and he originally had decided he wasn’t going to leave until he had been made to and that was happening. As it was he was going to be one of the last staff members to leave.

Once they had found out Mr Spooner had been the first to go- saying that he wasn’t going to wait around to get fired. Then it had been Miss Brahms, then Mr Rumbold and finally it was the three of them. Mr Humphries, Mrs Slocombe and himself.

“I can’t believe it is our last day” Mrs Slocombe commented sadly to him as she signed the book for the last time.

“I guess it was going to have to be at some point of time” He replied as he followed suit, “Mr Humphries is late though”

“Are you surprised?” She asked him, “How do you think he’ll arrive today?”

“With Mr Humphries? No idea” The store bell rang and Mr Humphries ran in out of breath while they both looked at him in shock.

“I’m sorry Captain Peacock, I’m… well to quote an old employee very nearly late…” he held back a snort of laughter as he realised who Mr Humphries was quoting.

“Well to respond to that: You are late Mr Humphries”

“I am?”

“You are”

“Well… being that it’s our last day and I can’t think up an excuse… don’t you think you could let it slide this once?” Mr Humphries asked which caused Mrs Slocombe to snort with laughter.

“As you’re honest, I guess I’ll let it slide this time Mr Humphries- just don’t let it happen again!” Mr Humphries sighed and he realised a few seconds too late what he had said.

“It’s bittersweet isn’t it?” Mrs Slocombe spoke up, “we all get to carry on with our lives but seeing everything end like this”

“I suppose it is… do you think we’ll have any customers today?”

“Who knows we might do.” The lift bell rang and Mr Humphries and Mrs Slocombe rushed to their counters while he pretended to make the display look nice.

As the doors opened two familiar people walked out and he had to blink twice to make sure he wasn’t seeing things.

“Mr Spooner? Miss Brahms?” He asked looking surprised.

“Oh Captain Peacock, I couldn’t not say good bye and I’m guessing Mr Spooner thought the same thing” Miss Brahms responded looking at Mr Spooner for confirmation.

“Exactly is it alright if we help out for old times sake?” Mr Spooner spoke up. He looked at Mr Humphries and then at Mrs Slocombe who both nodded.

“It’s fine by me.” He authorised with a smile and the lift came up again and again he had to blink twice “Mr Rumbold? What are you doing here?”

“Well I thought I may as well come in and help. This store is our second home after all”

“My thoughts exactly” Another voice spoke up from behind Mr Rumbold and this time he couldn’t help but laugh as Mr Humphries fainted.

“Mr Lucas how did you find out about the store?”

“Shirley rang me last night and told me. I couldn’t not say good bye” Mr Lucas explained with a grin. He looked at his family with a smile. Now this was how he wanted to say good bye to his second home.
