As I saw Robbo dive and miss my heart sank. That was it…our World Cup dreams were over. I saw those around me crumble to their knees, Stevie, Rio, John. John.
That’s what made my heart ache the most, seeing the pain and anguish mar his beautiful features left me mourning. Not for my failed penalty, or that we’d have to wait another 4 long years for an attempt to touch the glorious Jules Rimet, but for John. I know how much this meant to him, seeing his usual smiling and joking face scarred with distress caused me to crouch down beside him. He looked up at me, his eyes glazed with unshed tears, and in that moment, everything around us disappeared, it was just me and him.
“Don’t cry” I hushed, lifting a hand to stroke his cheek. How ironic it was that at those words…at seeing his broken hazel eyes… I cried.
