Little Damn Table:
http://lilshy.livejournal.com/32078.html#cutid1 His death had been quick. Every member of the staff had gone to say goodbye to the once senior member. They had all been surprised to hear that he had died. They gave wishes to his wife and his daughter and hoped that they would go on well without him.
He had been the one to show Mr Humphries the ropes and later on Mr Lucas. They had learnt everything they needed to know from him and vowed to show other staff members what to do.
He had been the one who brought Mrs Slocombe and Miss Brahms flowers when they where sick as well as Captain Peacock. They all missed him even Mr Rumbold and Young Mr Grace. Even after he left he still popped in for a visit or two.
Some members of the staff wished he hadn’t died but there was nothing they could do to stop it. His life had run his course and so they where sitting at his funeral, some crying there heart out, some too shocked to do anything.
Ernest Grainger would always be remembered at Grace Brothers. No matter how many staff walked through its doors.

His life had been in that building and that building was his life. He didn’t know what to do as he stood outside the door. Wondering what he was going to do now. It had been a stupid argument that had made him quit. One that had cost him his best friend, his job and his love interest. Actually to be more precise it had been one remark that had made him quit.
As he stood outside Grace Brothers department store he wished he could go in and take it all back. Tell Mr Grace he wanted to withdraw his resignation. But it was his pride that wouldn’t go back in. His stupid darn arse pride.
He would never be able to fix his friendship with him. He would never be able to ask her out again. He wouldn’t be able to make snide remarks at Mrs Slocombe or practice his late excuses on Captain Peacock and this was all on the day that his best friend had finally been given senior assistant.
Again he felt the need to go inside and apologize to everyone. To say the two words that hardly ever went past his lips. I’m sorry. He wanted to beg for forgiveness. But did he? No. He was too damn stubborn for his own good. He sighed as he took one look at the store that had once been his life and turned and walked away. Never going back into that building again. Never seeing any of his so-called friends again.

He walked into the building hoping beyond hope that he looked cheerful enough for no-one to think that anything was wrong. Something was wrong though. His mother had been driven to the hospital the previous night and he had been awake by her side the whole time. His mother had informed him that he should go home and rest but he couldn’t do that and he knew the next best thing was to go to work.
So he went leaving the Grace Brothers phone number with the doctors with strict instructions to call him immediately if something went wrong. Apparently it was a heart attack and everything would be fine but he didn’t want to take any chances.
He looked at his watch as he signed in and sighed. 8:40am and he was still in the clothes from last night. He knew he had to think up a reasonable excuse and he was trying to figure it out as he signed in the book.
“Mr Humphries, you do know you’re in yesterday’s attire don’t you?” Mr Spooner asked as he came in ten minutes later.
“Yes you remember Mr Davis from sports wear?” Mr Humphries asked with his practiced wicked grin.
“You didn’t?” Mr Spooner asked shocked.
“You’re completely right I didn’t.” He said with a laugh, “but it got you going didn’t it?” Mr Spooner laughed.
“So are you going to tell me what you got up to last night or am I going to have to guess”
“Mr Spooner, I’m sure anything you guessed would be further from the truth” Mr Humphries said with a sly grin. That part was true after all nobody would guess he spent the night at the hospital.
“So I’m guessing your not going to tell me?”
“You’re guessing correctly” He said with a well practiced smirk. He didn’t want anyone to worry so he decided not to tell the truth and by mid morning he was feeling a lot better.
He wasn’t originally free when Mr Spooner first took the phone call. He was taking a customer’s inside leg in the fitting room when Mr Spooner poked his head in, looking concerned.
“Mr Humphries are you free?” He shook his head.
“I’m currently doing this man’s inside leg Mr Spooner.” Mr Spooner lingered for a few moments, as if debating something, “yes Mr Spooner?” he finally stated looking up at him.
“It’s just that… you have a phone call from the hospital… it’s about your mother” He nearly dropped his tape measure.
“Excuse me sir, Mr Spooner can you please take over”
“Yes Mr Humphries” He rushed to the phone ignoring the odd looks he was getting from Captain Peacock, Mrs Slocombe and Miss Brahms.
“Wilberforce Humphries, here” He said into the phone dreading what he was going to hear.
“Mr Humphries, you advised us to call immediately if something happened to your mother” His face drained of colour and Captain Peacock and Mrs Slocombe rushed over.
“Yes…” He said shakily not entirely sure if he wanted to hear the news.
“Well I’m sorry to tell you but your mother had a second heart attack and unfortunately this time she didn’t make it”
“No!” He said angrily into the phone, “she can’t be. She was fine when I left her this morning. You said she would be fine. The nurses said she would be fine!”
“I’m sorry for your loss Mr Humphries, we will need you to come into the hospital soon though”
“Fine” Minutes later he was still staring into the phone in shock. His hand was shaking but he couldn’t do anything. His mother was gone and there was nothing he could do about it.
“Mr Humphries are you alright?” Mrs Slocombe questioned softly and he sighed. He guessed he had to tell them. But he didn’t want to. To him it made it seem more final, in a way it was though. He slowly put the phone back on the hook and turned towards two staff members that he considered friends.
“My mother passed away this morning”
