Brooke Davis turned her head, her green eyes falling on the shadowed figure. She leaned back on the picnic table as she looked up at the night sky again.
“How could she not be?” she asked.
Nathan Scott slid onto the table beside her, his long legs hanging over the edge. He gripped the opposing side as he leaned back, his eyes looking up towards the sky as well. The stars twinkled gently, as if sending some kind of coded message to one another, while the dark blue they sat against ignored the commotion.
The girl shifted a bit, her hands moving to rub her bare arms. The black dress she wore - low cut and knee-length - didn’t do much to block her from the crisp Tree Hill air. She stole a sideways glance at the guy beside her, taking in his illuminated profile as he stared at the vast heavens above them.
His suit was still on, but she noticed that he had loosened his tie. They looked like two seniors ready to head out to their prom, not grieving the loss of a loved one.
Feeling her eyes on him, Nathan turned his head. He searched her face for some kind of sign that he would live without the love of his life, but there was nothing there. The guilt gnawed at his conscious again, and he averted his gaze.
“You know what I think?” she whispered, afraid of breaking the fragile silence between them. Nathan shook his head, his attention focused on the stars. “I think Juliet was right.”
This caught his attention, and he turned his head to look at her, obviously confused. “For killing herself after finding Romeo semi-dead?” he questioned.
Brooke couldn’t help the smile that came to her face. “‘Give me my Romeo; and, when he shall die, take him and cut him out in little stars, and he will make the face of heaven so fine that all the world will be in love with night and pay no worship to the garish sun.’”
Nathan stared at her as if she was insane, and she looked back up at the stars. “I think every time someone we love is taken from us, they’re turned into stars. That way,” she said, “we always know they’re watching over us.”
He gave a small nod, pretending that he understood, but they both knew he didn’t. After a moment’s silence, Brooke spoke again, “So yes, Nathan, I do think Haley’s up there.”
