Renji was in his second year of high school when a girl in the incoming freshmen class caught his eye. She was rather plain looking, and seemed quite withdrawn much the way he had when he first came to Rikkaidai. The girl always had a book in her hand, and preferred to stay in her classroom over lunch even when it was nice outside.
Yukimura Seiichi exchanged a look with Sanada Genichiro, who only raised an eyebrow. "I don't think we should get involved, Seiichi."
"Don't you want to see Renji happy though?" Yukimura asked, smiling a little.
"Give him a chance to ask her on his own first. Then we'll get involved."
"One thing first." Yukimura slipped into the class room and strode over to the girl that had been driving Renji insane for the past couple weeks. The mousy haired girl had slipped her glasses off and rested them on her desk while she took a small break from reading. She looked up at the new comer.
"Is there something I can do for you, sempai?" She asked politely. Yukimura gave her a charming grin.
"I'm curious. Would you go on a date with one of my friends if I gave him a push in the right direction? That, and I'd like to know your name."
The girl laughed. "I might be convinced. It's not tall and silent over there? He's handsome in a classic way, but not my type. And I'm Shindo Mizu."
"Shindo-san." Yukimura nodded. "No, it's not him. You may have seen my other friend around you often. He's crushing on you in one of the worst ways I've ever seen, and he won't make any moves on his own. So I thought I'd help the process along." Mizu raised an eyebrow. Yukimura grinned.
"Sempai..." Mizu trailed off. She wasn't sure about this whole thing.
"I think you'd like him once you get to know him." Yukimura went about conspiring with Mizu to set her up with Renji.
Renji had passed by the classroom and his heart sunk when he saw one of his best friends chatting up the girl he knew Renji liked. He just continued on by back to his own classroom.

Later in the day, Renji was having trouble concentrating during tennis practice. "Yanagi-sempai, you're not even trying!" Kirihara Akaya accused. Renji smiled a little.
"Sorry, Akaya." He said, tightening his grip on his racquet. Renji did win the game, but with one of the closest scores between them ever. Sanada had been the umpire for their game, and was quite concerned with how Renji had played that game. It was like his heart wasn't in it.
"Akaya, go bother someone else." Sanada ordered him, and approached Renji. "Your game was off."
Renji looked at Sanada. "I noticed." He said, turning his racquet over in his hand. Sanada was looking a bit concerned, but wasn't sure he should ask. He was saved from that when Yukimura approached them. Renji stiffened a little.
"Renji. Come with me." Yukimura said, pulling Renji to the perimeter of the courts.
"What is it, Seiichi?" Renji asked, trying not to strangle his friend.
"I'm going to help you. You have it bad for her, and if you're not going to go and tell her 'I like you,' I'm just going to have to set you up on a date with her." Yukimura smiled innocently. Renji choked. THAT was why he was talking to her?! "You two have to be the shyest people I know." Yukimura shook his head. "I hope you don't have plans for Friday night."
"Seiichi, I don't need your help in asking out a girl." Renji finally managed to get out once he got over the shock.
"I think you did." Yukimura turned away, and headed off. Renji felt a headache coming on.

It was Friday night, and Renji had arrived at the meeting place about ten minutes early. He could feel several pairs of eyes on him. Renji walked over to the surrounding shrubbery in the park. "One, your choice of meeting places is stupid, and secondly, your choice of hiding places is even worse." He told his teammates, half of them there by choice and the rest of them dragged out because Yukimura said so.
"We won't interfere, Renji." Yukimura told him. "We're just going to make sure you don't mess this chance up. She's coming this way. Just forget we're here."
Mizu was coming up the path in the park, pausing just before she got to where Renji had decided to lean casually against the tree Yukimura was hiding behind. Mizu blushed upon seeing who Yukimura-sempai had set her up with. She had noticed him before, but didn't realize he had been looking at her before. Yukimura gave Renji a shove towards her, and settled back to hiding.
Renji cleared his throat. "Ah..."
Mizu blushed and bowed to him. "Yanagi-sempai! I didn't realize that it was you Yukimura-sempai wanted to set me up with." She remained blushing.
Renji was trying not to blush himself, but he was still tongue tied for the moment. He took a breath. "I didn't realize the same thing, Shindo-san." He paused, feeling an awkward silence descending upon them. "Would you like to get some coffee or something?" Mizu nodded and blushed even more as Renji grabbed her wrist and pulled her along with him.
Renji and Mizu ducked into the first cafe they came across and took a seat. "I'm sorry for the rush away from there, but the tennis team seems to think I don't know how to date a girl." Renji smiled a little. "Though...this is my first date ever." He blushed a little. Mizu was still blushing as well.
"It's my first date too." She said quietly.
"You didn't go out with me just because a sempai asked you to, did you?" Renji asked. Mizu shook her head.
"I would have told Yukimura-sempai where to go if I didn't want to go out with you." She said, pausing only to order a cup of tea when their waitress came over. "I really wanted to have a chance with you. You're smart, you're calm, collected...I could go on, but I'm sure you don't want to hear it, Yanagi-sempai."
Renji paused. He was her sempai, but that sounded strange to hear someone other than Akaya address him as such. "You don't have to call me -sempai off of school grounds." Renji smiled at her. "I'd much prefer it if you called me 'Renji.'" Mizu blinked.
"But..." Mizu trailed off.
"It's alright, as long as we're not at school. At least, not yet, anyway."
Mizu nodded in understanding. "Alright, Renji-kun." She said, not quite willing to drop off any honorifics at all yet. Renji nodded, not willing to force the issue. Mizu looked down at the table, not quite sure what to do or say now, other than sip at her tea which had been set before her a few moments ago. She looked over at Renji's cup which had pure, black coffee in it.
Renji sipped at the bitter beverage as he watched Mizu. "Don't like coffee?" He asked, fishing for anything to talk about. Mizu shook her head.
"Never quite took to it." She said, smiling. "So what do you do for fun other than tennis?" Mizu asked.
"Read, mostly." Renji answered. "I'm planning on studying literature after high school. Nothing like getting paid to do what you love, right?" Mizu laughed a little.
"Of course. I haven't really decided what I'm going to do yet." She said, frowning a little, knowing that in the next couple of years she'd have to decide on a career path.
"You have time." Renji told her, smiling. "Shindo-san?"
"If you want me to call you by your name, you should do the same for me. All my friends call me 'Mizu-chan.'" She said, smiling a little. "Or just Mizu if you're comfortable with that."
"Mizu." Renji repeated. "What would you like to do from here?" He asked. Mizu glanced at her watch.
"Actually, my curfew is in a half hour." She said, frowning a little.
"Then may I walk you home?" Renji asked, noticing it was after eight o'clock.
Mizu smiled and blushed, nodding in answer. The two finished their respective caffeine laden beverages, and Renji insisted on paying for both of them.
Mizu's home wasn't too far from where they had ended up, and Renji escorted her right up to the door. "Thank you, Ya-...ah, Renji-kun." Mizu corrected herself, blushing a little. Renji smiled.
"We'll have to do this again sometime." Mizu nodded in answer. Renji leaned down and kissed her on the forehead. "And I mean that." Mizu blushed deeply, jiggled the key in the lock and walked into her family's apartment.
Renji was smiling a little to himself. He would have to call Mizu tomorrow and see if she was available for another date tomorrow, one that was a bit more planned out than this was.
