“Did you see that thing on his head?”

Some snickers. “Think he forgot to take the towel off after his shower or something?”

“Forget that. Did you see how big he is? No eleven year old is that big.”

“Maybe he got left back?”

“Oh, so he’s big and dumb?” More snickers.

Shinji usually made a point of ignoring gossip. It never communicated anything useful, and it really was a waste of time, in his opinion. However, something about this gossip made something in Shinji stand up and take notice, though he wasn’t sure why.

“Shinji!” Kamio ran up to his friend, panting slightly. “Did you hear?”

“I hear a lot of things, Akira,” Shinji pointed out. “I heard my family this morning, I hear you now, I hear traffic, birds, other students…”

“Shinji.” Kamio’s voice was both amused and exasperated. “I meant, did you hear that we’re getting a new transfer student today?”

“It’s only the second day of school. How new can they be?”

Kamio smacked him playfully. “He’s new to us!”

Shinji bit his lip, thinking. “Is that who I heard people talking about? This new kid?”

“Probably.” Kamio shrugged. “I wonder if he’s nice.” “Nice,” in Kamio-speak, meant not like the other sixth graders.

“We’ll find out. Though, if he is the one everyone was talking about….I feel sorry for him.” Shinji shook his head. “He’s getting it worse than we ever did.”

Shinji’s first thoughts when he saw Ishida Tetsu was that the gossip was, in a way, right. He was taller and stockier than most of their class, though even Shinji could tell that the mass was in muscle, not fat. The wrap on his head drew only the most cursory glance from Shinji, as he was more focused on Ishida’s eyes. They were large for his face, deep brown, and, Shinji thought, the kindest eyes that he had ever seen.

Shinji knew then, if he hadn’t from the moment that he had first heard the malicious gossip, that this boy was going to become a good friend. He looked over at Kamio, and saw a look of perfect agreement and understanding on his best friend’s face.

When lunch came, Ishida was left sitting alone, and something about his body language spoke of him being used to that. His surprise, therefore, was forgivable when Kamio took a seat on one side of him and Shinji claimed the seat on the other side.

“Ummm…hi?” The suspicion was heavy in his voice, and Ishida eyed them as if calculating if he could take them or not.

Shinji took pity on the new boy. “I’m Shinji, he’s Akira. We’re going to be your friends, which means that you don’t have to be afraid of us. The other kids are jerks and they don’t know how to be anything but clones. But we’re unique, and we actually think for ourselves.” His speech dissolved into half-audible mutterings about the other kids and how mean they were, and how they couldn’t pass a test if their lives depended on it.

Ishida turned confused eyes onto Kamio. “Is he always like that.”

“Sometimes he’s worse,” Kamio said cheerfully as he started on his lunch. “But you really can’t ask for a better friend than Shinji. Or me,” he added, almost as an afterthought.

Ishida looked from the muttering brunette to the seemingly oblivious redhead. “I don’t think I want to, actually.”

Shinji nodded suddenly. “Then it’s settled. You’re our new best friend. Can you have more than one best fiend? Because Akira is my best friend, but I think I like this guy too, and I don’t want him to think that I think less of him than Akira just because I’ve known Akira for three years already, and….”

Ishida couldn’t help it. He started to laugh. “No, I know I don’t want to now.”
