The weather was beautiful for a spring day. Several couples were spending the day in the park, having picnic lunches. Yanagi Renji and Shindo Mizu were no exceptions. The couple had found a nice spot in the shade and were enjoying their lunch.
Mizu had finished eating and was leaning against Renji. "Renji-kun?" Renji nodded to show he was listening. "My parents want to meet you." Renji sat up a bit more, eyes opening a little. He knew this day would come eventually.
"Of course." He smiled.
"Just be yourself. They'll like you." Mizu reassured him.
"I hope so." Renji said, having a bit of a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach.

It was a week later when Renji found himself on the Shindo's doorstep, waiting nervously after knocking on the door. It wasn't that he had never knocked on the door before. It was just that he had never been invited inside before. An older lady in her late 30's answered the door, smiling.
"You must be Renji-kun. Please come in." She said, opening the door. Renji bowed, and stepped inside, removing his shoes and switching them for house slippers.
"Thank you." Renji answered, still feeling rather nervous.
"Mizu and her father are in the living room, just through there. Dinner will be ready in about 20 minutes." Mizu's mother said, pointing towards the living room then turning to go into the kitchen.
Renji nervously approached the living room, but held on to his air of confidence once he saw Mizu. Mizu flashed him a smile once she saw him and motioned for him to come sit beside her. Mizu's father nodded approvingly at Renji.
"So you're the boy that has Mizu's heart all a-flutter." Renji blushed a little at this. Mizu just smiled a little. "So what are your plans for the future?"
Renji cleared his throat. "Well, I plan on going on through the university and studying literature."
"What are you going to do with that?" The old man asked.
"More than likely teach." Renji answered, as that was one of the few things he would be able to do with that sort of degree. "I've tutored some of my younger teammates, and others when I have the time, and I've enjoyed that. I know teaching isn't an entirely one on one process, but I think tutoring is good expierence."
Mizu's father nodded. "Teammates? What do you play?"
"Tennis."
"And he's good at it too." Mizu said, smiling.
Mizu's father just nodded as his wife came in and announced that dinner was ready. Mizu waited for her father to get up, then got up when Renji did. She held Renji back. "I think he likes you." Renji smiled a little, and nodded.
"I hope so."
"I think the tutoring thing impressed him. He's not much of a sports guy though." Mizu said. "Let's go eat dinner." Mizu said and led Renji into the dining room where her parents were already seated.
"Sit down, kids." Mizu's mother said, passing the rice to her daughter.
Renji waited for Mizu to pass the food to him, and ate small bites, still not entirely relaxed. Mizu slid her hand under the table and squeezed his leg. Renji smiled at her.
"So, Renji-kun, what are your plans after you graduate?" Mizu's mother asked, having missed the conversation in the living room.
"I plan on continuing through university and studying literate and most likely teaching." He answered again, taking it in stride.
She nodded. "You seem like you'd be good at that."
The conversation ranged from that to the weather, and then came the one question Renji wasn't sure too sure about. Mizu's father leaned forward in his seat and looked Renji right in the eye. "Have you considered Mizu's feeling in your plans?"
"Father!" Mizu protested.
Renji squeezed Mizu's shoulder. "It's a valid question." He said. "And I have. I trust in her to support my decisions just as I will support whatever decisions she makes concerning her own life. And hopefully we'll stay together through whatever life throws at us."
"Renji..." Mizu breathed out. Her father raised an eyebrow.
"So do you intend to marry my daughter at some point, then?" Mizu's eyes went wide.
"If we think it's the right thing to do at some point, then yes." Renji answered. Mizu was on the verge of fainting. Renji had never said anything to that effect before, and if he did propose, she would say yes.
"Breathe, dear." Her mother reminded her, and Mizu took some deep breaths.
"I'm alright." She smiled.
Renji turned to her. "I'm not proposing tonight." He smiled. "We're not out of high school yet. We have plenty of time before we make any life changing decisions like that." Mizu nodded.
"You know, it's not going to be much of a surprise now."
Mizu's mother was giggling behind her hand, while her father nodded in approval. Renji glanced at the nearest clock.
"I'm sorry, but I should be getting home." Renji said, finally relieved. "My parents wouldn't appreciate me breaking curfew." He stood up and bowed to each of Mizu's parents.
"You're welcome here anytime, Renji-kun." Mizu's mother said as she and her daughter escorted him to the door where Renji was changing back into his shoes.
"Thank you, Shindo-san." Renji said. "Have a good evening." Mizu stood on her tiptoes and kissed Renji's cheek.
"You survived." She said quietly. "Now when do I get to meet your parents?"
"Ah..." Renji froze. Well, he survived Mizu's family, but Mizu was the only child. Not only did he have to introduce her to his parents, but his sister as well. He was sure they'd all like her, the only problem was getting them all home on the same night, and now that Kana was in university... "I'll arrange it soon." Renji told her, giving her a quick kiss on the forehead when her parents weren't looking. The night had gone better than he had thought it would.
