"Mom, I think the rice is burnt."

"Tori, is that curry? I thought you weren't going to fix that ever again after the last time."

"We only have plain vanilla ice cream? I thought we had some chocolate chip..."

Yanagi Tori sighed. She wondered sometimes how her family managed to survive the way it did. "Renji, throw out the burnt rice, and salvage what you can. Kenichi, it's not curry. Kana, get away from the freezer and everyone that is not trying to help fix dinner get out of my kitchen."

"I thought this girl already liked you, Renji. Why are you trying to impress her yet?" Kana asked her little brother as she walked past him.

"Because I'd like to think Mizu would appreciate it if she knew that I know how to cook."

"You burnt the rice."

Renji just stared at the blackened grains in his hand. "Shut up." Kana just grinned and got out of the kitchen before their mother told her again.

"Renji, there's a reason guys marry women, and cooking is one of them." Kenichi told his son, while his wife glared at him.

"Kenichi, don't be putting the wrong idea in your son's mind. He has good intentions. And unlike you, he's at least trying. When was the last time you offered to cook for everyone? On the other hand, it would be worse than burnt rice if you did try to cook." Tori sighed. "And if you say anything sexist like that in front of Renji's girlfriend, I will hurt you." She threatened her husband.

Renji just smiled a little. It was just the way his parents were, and it had been a lot more chaotic around the Yanagi household since Kana had moved out to the university dorms. A lot of the time Tori didn't even bother cooking unless she knew everyone was going to be home, and due to the tennis schedule, Renji wasn't home at their normal dinner time most nights. It had actually been almost two weeks before everyone was available for a family dinner, and Renji had planned on introducing his girlfriend to his family on this night.

The doorbell rang amidst the craziness. "I'll get it!" Kana called from the living room, and answered the door before anyone else could get there. Kana grinned at the girl that stood on the other side. "You're cute...You must be Renji's girlfriend." She motioned for Mizu to come on in.

"I'm not too early am? Renji-kun said around 6:30..." Mizu trailed off nervously. Kana giggled. Very few people used honorifics with her brother's name because he was so easy going with almost everyone he met that he usually insisted people just use his name without any honorifics.

"It's fine." Kana said, handing a pair of house slippers to Mizu. Mizu slid out of her shoes and slid the slippers on. "I'm Kana, the brat's older sister."

"Nice to meet you." Mizu said quietly. Renji finally came to greet Mizu.

"Whatever Kana has told you about me is a lie." He smiled and hugged her, whispering in her ear. "Sure about this?" Mizu nodded in answer. Renji pulled back. "You're actually just in time, Mom and I just finished fixing dinner."

Mizu blinked, looking shocked. "You...cooked?" She asked, some what disbelieving of that. Renji nodded, leading her into the dining room.

"Only part of the meal." He admitted. "Come on, time to meet my parents." Renji smiled as he wrapped his arm around Mizu's waist and guided her to the dining room where Tori was just finishing setting the last of the food on the table. Everyone was taking a seat, and Renji nodded at Mizu to go ahead and do the same.

Renji remained standing and cleared his throat. "Everyone, this is Mizu."

"It's nice to meet you finally." Tori said, motioning for her son to sit down as well.

Mizu just blushed and nodded, politely adding food to her plate as it was passed to her. Once everyone was served and started eating the conversation turned to Mizu's plans for the future.

"Ah...I'm not really sure yet." She said, looking down at her plate. "I do want to get a degree, but I'm not sure what I'd do with it when I get it. I may go into business administration, it's a fairly flexible degree." Mizu took a bite of food before she could start talking nervously.

"No one's pushing you to do anything you don't want to." Tori said, smiling at her. Kenichi nodded in agreement with his wife.

"Finish high school first. Then you can worry about your future. Speaking of which, did you ever decide on a major, Kana." Kenichi turned the conversation to his oldest child.

Kana sighed. "Actually, I did. Psychology." She smiled.

"You'll be a good counselor or something like that." Tori said. Kana nodded and finished eating.

"So how did you and the brat get together?" Kana asked Mizu, her smile widening into a grin.

"Kana!" Tori scolded her daughter. Renji kicked his sister under the table.

Mizu blushed a little. "Yukimura-sempai set us up, actually."

"Ah, Seiichi's good for something other than destroying people on the tennis court." Kana grinned. "I didn't think your friends were that smart, Renji." Renji just sighed.

"He's actually very nice." Mizu said, feeling like she should defend her boyfriend's friends.

"She's just teasing, Mizu." Renji said, smiling to try to let Mizu know she didn't have to try. He knew that Kana's teasing meant that she was accepted, and the reassuring nature of his mother and the wise advice of his father meant that they accepted her as well.

"Ah..." Mizu just trailed off. At least his parents weren't asking them when they were going to get married. Mizu felt a bit out of her element as Renji's family seemed closer than hers was in a way. Renji sensed that Mizu was feeling a bit uncomfortable.

Renji stood up. "May Mizu and I be excused?" He asked politely. Tori nodded, smiling. Renji offered his hand to Mizu who took it and let Renji lead her away from the table and up the stairs.

"Renji-kun?" She asked.

"It's alright. It's just my room, and no, no one will mind as long we leave the door open."

Mizu blushed a little, but it would be interesting to see his room. She wasn't sure what she was expecting when she walked in to Renji's room. There was a bed, with a plain brown comforter with green patterned sheets, a dresser, a closet, two full book shelves, a desk with a computer on it and a black "leather" bean bag chair in the corner.

Mizu wandered over to the books and glanced through the titles. "No wonder you want to study literature." She said, smiling a little.

"Kana always said I'd have more books than the library one day." Renji said, taking a seat on his bed, letting Mizu wander around. Mizu laughed at that and went to sit next to him.

"Thank you." She said quietly. "Your family is so close. I'm not used to that. My parents seem so distant to me sometimes." Renji wrapped his arm around Mizu.

"I got that feeling." He said, holding her close. Mizu smiled, breathing in his scent. She was happy there. Kana walked past the door, and paused and smiled at them. Renji smiled back at his sister, knowing everything was alright. Mizu missed this exchange as her eyes were closed.

"I always wanted a little sister." Kana said quietly. "I guess this is close enough." She winked at her brother and went to her own room. Mizu heard that and smiled. The Yanagis accepted her.
