There was something about the smell of sweat and hard work. The boy's tennis team always had that lingering scent around them.

Shindo Mizu was watching the team's practice. Her eyes never left her boyfriend, not even when he returned the ball to the opponent he was currently playing against. Someone sat down next to her, and from the scent it was one of the members of the team.

"We all work hard. And I know the schedule doesn't allow for any of us to spend much time with our significant others." The quiet voice of Yukimura Seiichi drifted to Mizu's ears.

"I know." She answered. "I just like watching Renji-kun. His movements are so precise yet so graceful." Yukimura laughed.

"What about the rest of us?" He asked, curious to know what she thought.

"Your moves are pure grace. Totally fluid and not a wasted movement. Sanada-sempai, he's not exactly graceful. I'd say he's a bit stilted, actually, but it's very efficient." Yukimura laughed at that. That sounded fairly right.

"I don't mind you watching as long as you're not interfering or distracting Renji."

"Don't worry, Yukimura-sempai. I'd never do that." Mizu said.

"Practice is almost over. Those two don't want to leave their game unfinished though."

"I figured that. I wanted to walk home with him though, so I can wait." She said, turning back to the game in progress.

The game finished in about ten minutes, Renji and his opponent shaking hands. Renji glanced over at the stands and smiled at Mizu and headed over there.

"I thought you would have gone home by now." He said.

"Ah...I wanted to walk with you." She said quietly and nervously. Renji frowned. Mizu rarely sounded like that.

"Can you wait another 15 minutes while I shower?" He asked.

"I'd rather not. I don't mind the smell." Mizu said.

"Alright, I have to put my things away though. Meet me at the gate, alright?" Mizu nodded and headed that way while Renji headed for the club room.

"Mizu-chan's still waiting for you?" Yukimura asked, pulling his school uniform back on. Renji nodded.

"I think something's wrong. She usually goes on home, especially when we have practice." Renji frowned as he put his racquet away and grabbed his bag. "I'd better not keep her waiting. I'll see you tomorrow, Seiichi."

Renji jogged out to the gate where Mizu was leaning against the wall. She smiled when she saw him. Renji slowed down to walking. "What's wrong?" He finally asked.

Mizu took a deep breath, and remained silent. "I'll...tell you later." She said quietly, moving closer to him, despite the lingering smell of sweat. Renji wrapped his arm around her waist and guided her up to the house, hoping at least his mother was home.

Tori looked up. "You're home early." She said, then saw Mizu just slightly behind her son. She raised an eyebrow at him. Renji shrugged.

"I need a shower." He said, setting his stuff near the door. Tori nodded.

"Come on, Mizu-chan." Tori said, taking the girl's hand and leading her into the kitchen while Renji headed for the bathroom.

Renji relaxed a little as the hot water washed over him, removing the sweat and grime of the day. He was still worried about Mizu, but it felt good to be out of his stinky tennis clothes and smelling of citrus-y body wash and shampoo.

After dressing in a pair of jeans and a plain white t-shirt, Renji headed downstairs where the scent of strong tea reached his nostrils before he reached the kitchen. His mother was sitting at the table with Mizu, talking quietly. Tori looked up, and nodded at her son. "I'll let you and Renji talk." Tori got up, squeezed Mizu's shoulder, and left them alone.

Renji poured himself a cup of tea, then sat down. "Do you want to talk?" He asked quietly, not wanting to pry too much. Mizu looked down into her cup.

"My parents are fighting. It's worse than their usual fights." Mizu said quietly. "Mother was throwing things at me and father. Neither of us got hurt, but I'm scared." She said, a tear trying to escape. Renji just stared and set his cup aside.

"Mizu..." He said, pulling her close to him. "What did you tell my mother?" He asked.

"Most of the same thing. She said I could stay in Kana-san's room tonight if I didn't want to go home." Mizu leaned in against him, reassured by the presence of another warm body.

Renji ran his fingers through Mizu's hair. "Are you?" He asked, pulling away a little.

"I think so. I don't want to go home to that. Mother will calm down in a day or two though." Mizu said, standing up. "Your mother said there was some leftovers we could have." She leaned against Renji's back. He nodded and got the food out and set about reheating it. He got a couple of plates and some silverware out while the food spun around in the microwave.

Mizu sat down again. "Renji..." She trailed off, one of the few times she's dropped any honorifics off his name. Renji served her some of the leftovers.

"It'll be alright." He said, sitting down as well. Mizu smiled.

"Thank you." She said quietly, and started eating. They ate in silence for a while. Mizu finished up, then took it upon herself to start cleaning up.

"You don't have to do that."

"I need to do something to keep my mind occupied. And yes, I do still need to finish my homework." Mizu said, smiling a little as she finished washing the dishes they used.

"Come on upstairs then." Renji said, leading the way. Mizu nodded and dried her hands off, grabbing her book bag. Once she got there, she headed into Renji's room and settled on the bean bag chair. "You alright there?" He asked.

"Fine." Mizu said, making sure her skirt was covering her decently. She worked quietly on her assignments, finishing the easier things first, and let out a frustrated sigh once she got to her algebra assignment. "Renji-kun? You're good with math, right?"

"Usually." He said, turning around. "What's wrong?"

"I understood this in class, but I can't figure it out on my own." Mizu said, blushing a little. Renji knelt down on the floor beside her and started explaining it as best he could. Mizu tried a few problems on her own while Renji watched.

"I think you have it now." Renji squeezed her arm. "Just ask if you need any more help." He said, returning to his computer to finish typing an essay he had due.

Mizu finished up the last of her homework quickly, and bounced up on her feet and leaned over Renji's shoulders seeing what he was writing. The scent of citrus was drifting from his neck. "You smell like oranges." Mizu said, licking at Renji's neck. Renji shivered at the contact.

"Mizu...Give me a minute." Renji said, saving his file and turning the monitor off. He got up and pulled Mizu along with him to the bed. Renji pulled her down so they were both sitting, and leaned in, kissing her deeply. Mizu was shocked at first, and clumsily tried to return the kiss. "Mizu, just relax." Renji said once they broke for air.

Mizu nodded. "Sorry." She smiled, leaning on him. "Thank you."

"For what?" Renji asked quietly.

"Saving me, what else?" Mizu said, leaning up and kissing him again.

Renji looked at his alarm clock. It was after 10 already. "Mizu, you'd better go to Kana's room. I don't want either of us to be in trouble with my parents." Mizu nodded. "I'll make sure you're up in time to get to school."

"Thank you." Mizu said, padding off to the room across the hall.

Renji flopped back onto his own bed, too tired to change into pajamas for the night. Something just felt odd and wrong as he tossed and turned for a while.

Mizu was tossing and turning as well, feeling like something was wrong. It was a mixture of the strange room in a strange place, and something being just off that she couldn't quite put a finger on. It was well after midnight when she got up and quietly snuck into Renji's room and laid down on the bed with him. His arm wrapped around her waist, despite the fact that he was asleep. Mizu smiled and breathed in the now familiar scent of her boyfriend. It was too right at this moment to care if they got in trouble.
